Speexx Review

Speexx <—- (Click here to Apply) is based in Germany and they are hiring English teachers. Teachers must have a TESL/TESOL/CELTA certificate and speak another language at a B2 level. They specialize in teaching business English to adults as their students are mostly business professionals looking to improve all aspects of their English, including their writing skills. They also teach Spanish, German, French and Italian. You can “learn while you earn” with free access to Speexx language learning solutions and access to a global network of support and coaches. Teachers can be 100% remote and you have complete autonomy over your work schedule. They pay €6 per 1:1 virtual session  (25-minute unit + 5 minutes admin) with paid and fair cancellation policies plus paid initial future training.

    I’ve seen lots of negative reviews on here so I’d like to balance it out and say something positive. For context, I’ve been with the company for around a year and a half.

    The starting rate for English teachers (or coaches, as they’re referred to) is 6 euros per half-hour session (25 teaching + 5 follow-up admin) and you get a guaranteed 1 euro/session (2/hour) increase after 12 months. That sounds small but it really adds up. In addition, they have “open” (group) sessions which are paid at a slightly higher rate and dedicated “workshop” classes which pay significantly better. The exact amount you are paid for the workshops depends on your “base” rate. For example, mine is now 7€ / half-hour session but a workshop is 20€/hour. Another commenter mentioned that this depends on where you are from, but their own internal docs say that the pay rate is the same regardless of your location. Perhaps there was a policy change? In addition, they conduct pay reviews every January. There is a document on this included as part of training, and frankly I applaud that level of transparency because it certainly wasn’t my experience in other companies.

    Preparation is minimal and the students are all adults, which for me personally makes a huge contribution to my quality of life that far outweighs the (slightly!) better pay of Chinese companies teaching kids. Of course, that’s subjective. One other pro for Speexx is that they’re generally really good at filling your calendar, especially after the first couple of months. I find them to be really reliable in that regard.

    Of course, there are things they could do better. I can completely understand another commenter’s point of view that the training required at the beginning is overwhelming, and teachers with multiple years of experience aren’t going to be attracted by a €12/hour starting salary.

    Overall, I would recommend Speexx, especially if you’ve got a strong preference for working with adults and live in a country where the cost of living isn’t too high.

    The most overwhelming company to work for. If you want to undergo constant training and be updated every few minutes then this is the company for you. It’s hard to keep track although they think they have streamlined things, I am of a different opinion. You need corporate email, corporate teams, corporate login for the training center, log in for intercom, log in for the classroom, log in to access the magazine. Nothing is consolidated, a lot of admin for very little pay. They also have different pay rates for different locations very much like TutorABC / itutorgroup. It’s just a lot to keep track of. Maybe if they are the only company you work with it would be manageable but not if you are working for multiple companies. The training and management team are friendly but the overall system and processes are just too much and can be simplified into a friendlier user interface.

    Actually, this is a very good company and has been around for many years. While their initial pay is lower than others, they do give salary increases and the opportunity to earn money with other activities (such as assessments, writing corrections, etc). I have worked for many different online companies and this is one of my favorites. I would highly recommend them. They require that you speak more than one language because you are teaching from A1 level to adults and businesses. In some cases, you must be able to explain things in another language. Also, they teach much more than English and offer free language classes to their teachers.

    They don’t pay 10 euros for a 30 minute lesson. I have a degree, TEFL diploma and 10 years online teaching business English and was offered a post paying 5 euros for a 25 minute lesson 5 minutes to leave feedback followed by another 25minute lesson. 10 euros for 50 minutes teaching and 10 minutes feedback, not for me.

    I recently applied to Speexx and received a very prompt reply asking for tech specs, a short intro video and my availability for an interview. I replied with the required information and then never heard anything back. Unfortunately it’s left quite an unprofessional impression with me.

    Don’t waste your time on this Company! I am a Certified Teacher with over 15 years of experience. I have taught Kindergarten all the way up through University. I am a US Citizen. I speak German and Spanish Fluently. I speak three other languages at an intermediate level. I worked for a consulting firm is Asia for two years training Bank executives to engage in International business practices. This German, (Speex) Company sent me a letter saying thanks for your interest, we are not interested. If a guy like me, born in Germany, educated in the US from five years old, speaks, who speaks, reads and writes German at a Native level, can’t get a job for a German Company, there must be a problem with this Company. There are so many Mickey Mouse Teaching Companies hiring remote workers these days. If you are interested in teaching, just get certified and work at a real school, it’s much less hassle and you get medical coverage and benefits from the first day. Good luck everyone!

      Wow, you certainly have a high opinion of yourself don’t you? Perhaps it was this arrogance, rather than an ongoing commitment to self-development that precluded you from securing a position here, rather than the company itself. But of course, you won’t be able to see that. Good luck lowering yourself, and rotting away at other schools with the rest of us less worthy teachers x

      Try adjusting your attitude as it may have had a role to play in your process. Confidence is appealing but arrogance is a deal-breaker for most jobs. I am looking to start teaching English as a Degreed non-native female from Africa with a solid recruitment background. Based on the reviews here, I guess Speexx isn’t for me then. If anyone knows of companies that are willing to a hire black person from South Africa for online teaching, please assist.

    They won’t accept you unless you have a Native level of 2 languages. I wasted my time applying. I am a Native English teacher with 6 years teaching experience.
