This company seemed so promising. But, it was a big letdown. They did not interview all and those that interviewed had to present a lesson in either languages or math. I did so in math. When everyone started at the beginning of an American school year I was told that the languages would start first and they would let me know when math would roll out. Needless to say, it never rolled out. The only reason I selected math was I figured that more people would request language arts. I guess I was the only fool that went out for math. I am good in both subjects but, this company was a really downer.

I had hoped that students would be assigned. Nope, all the names of students and too many tutors would have something like a frenzy. I was told that tutors grabbed what they could for fear of not getting anyone. There were some who did not get anyone. I guess they were not quick enough. In the US one would expect things to be more organized- that was not the case at all. Different markets (cities/school districts) opened up at different times. I never bothered to go to the frenzy. While I would have liked to teach I do not think that everyone in one area grabbing kid’s names is worth it. For me, this was to be a part-time job. With the crazy way of fighting over kids, it was not worth the effort.

The other issue I had with this company was they were constantly advertising for openings. I believe VIP Kids did this. I recall that they had more tutors than available students.

Companies like this are not worth the time of day. The other companies that taught US kids to get caught up were Tutorgigs and I heard a company by the name of Paper did the same. I know there were many more companies because all the states received federal funds, Some school districts ran out of funds before their intended end. Typical public school- very disorganized. I know that some of the schools I worked in were quite disorganized in the admin area. In fact, the start date was delayed from what was originally planned. I see that as another public school flaw- more Indians than Chiefs.

Going forward I have no intention of applying, I would rather stock shelves at Walmart! At least there I know I will be paid the same amount for the amount of hours put in. I know some folks who were depending on this money were let down.

Good luck if you apply! Do I think they will be more organized on year #2- no.

The preliminary fingerprinting and background check process is a real obstacle for teachers living in the US because each state where there are students that you can teach requires its own process. You get the most classes if you are cleared to teach in the greatest number of states. The eligible states change or new ones are added, and to teach the students living there you must get cleared. Teachers are required to pay upfront for the process and get reimbursed later by BookNook. If this is the case for US-based teachers, it is even worse for overseas teachers. I found out about this more than half way through my application process and felt really disappointed. The kind of teaching that BookNook provides- reading recovery, is my passion. I felt truly let down by this requirement.

There is A LOT of premilimanary fingerprinting that must be done to get hired. Persons living outside of the US, most likely will not be hired(?). I have been hired since July and have yet to teach a class. Supposedly, there will be more classes opening up soon but, nothing for me yet.
