Air Reading terminated the contracts of their reading intervention specialists just in time for the November elections. Quite a few were women of color! Firing Black women seems to be trending in U.S. companies. Plus, there is poor representation within Air Reading’s corporate office. It mainly consists of white women and men with a few tokens.

They also don’t care about improving literacy rates! It’s a capitalist machine designed to get lucrative contracts with U.S. school districts to give mediocre reading assistance to at-risk youth.

If you’re a teacher or a superintendent of a school district–pay attention to this:

Air Reading, for the largest part, does not do thorough background checks of teachers. We have a private Facebook and WhatsApp group. A few current Air Reading tutors admitted to having DUIs or being mistaken for a pedophile because of a “misunderstanding.” They were happy Air Reading didn’t “catch it.” At the point, I left both groups.

These are the tutors working with at-risk children in the United States!

I didn’t understand why Xing Zhang, a man from China, cares about improving the literacy rates of American youth until it became clear. He doesn’t care. What he cares about is increasing profits.

I specifically asked why they were terminating my contract when only a few months earlier, they asked me to renew it? Their response was to block me!

I was a tutor who had exceptional attendance. They even contacted me to be part of special projects.

How can this company claim to be empathetic towards at-risk American youth with poor reading skills if they treat tutors inhumanely?

Plus, and I’m so glad I took screenshots of these conversations–some Air Reading tutors (some currently contracted with the company) shared how frustrated they were with students.

A few alluded to their race and mentioned them being less intelligent because they probably came from single-parent households. Quite a few were praying they wouldn’t get a “special” student because they were the most annoying!

They promote sycophants only. When I first started, I asked for tips on staying on Air Reading’s good side. It wasn’t having good attendance or being an effective teacher.

It was entirely based on being sociable on Slack. Those who consistently praised Air Reading and shared “successful” classes were shown favoritism. It was about joining their activities during the summer.

A few even lie about having family members with cancer or having children in order to get more classes!

I’m a teacher who went from “pet to threat.” They praised me at first and then cut me off without a reason.

Air Reading be like: “make the behaviorally challenged students behave… or no bookings for you.”

Ok, so you’re an employer? Pay the fines, AIR READING and categorize contractors as employees.

    ADVICE IS TO 100% AVOID.

This company is not fair to the teachers! We have discovered there is a secret group that allows only a few teachers to substitute classes. Some teachers have no classes and others have too many. The only way to succeed is to praise Air Reading in their group or ask inane questions to attract the Air Reading team. I was surprised to discover this! Don’t bother unless you’re prepared to kiss you know what. I was told the management has changed. Morale is low among teachers now.
