I started to work in this company in June 2021. In the beginning, I liked this company very much. The HRs were very helpful. I loved the kids.
But since there is no payment, I can’t work just for free. They were promising to pay my June salary in late July and now in late August. At the moment of my hiring, nobody told me that there will be such long delays in payment. My Agent Ivy from iBest Teacher just informed me that Waijiaoyi sometimes will defer the payment. But as a result, recently I learned that almost 100 teachers were not paid or were just partly paid with delays for 6 months and more. Some of them are still waiting for their payments for November 2020.
I do not recommend working for this company. You will just waste your time.
This company even does not pay their trainers and Chinese HRs. When I started to work for this company there was one team of HRs. Now all of them left this company because of non-payment.

Don’t waste your time with this company. I’ve been working there for 3 years and since last year they are late with salaries. Teachers are waiting for their slaries since November. They keep lying and giving us false info. They aren’t even paying their HRs, it’s pathetic at this point. No one is answering messages anymore, DON’T WORK FOR FREE!!!

  • Jazmin Lara

Don’t work here; They haven’t paid teachers in months. Like many other teachers, I had to providing my services because they kept delaying our payments.

“…teach groups of 8-30 students of 5-16 year olds.”About this sentence, maybe you can make a little adjustment about the last two words.

I have been an employee at Waijiaoyi for the past year. It is a startup which has its headquarters in Haidian, Beijing. The company offers two separate online platforms. One where teachers may be employed from their home and can work online using their computer and one that requires the physical presence of the teacher in Beijing. I am occupied in the second of the two.

The post is particularly interesting because it is a blend of teaching and acting. It moves away from the traditional classroom. The teachers work in a green room and are projected onto a virtual reality background which is then broadcasted to schools across China. During the broadcast students who are online are called to interact with the foreign teacher. In turn, they are also facilitated in their learning, by the help of a second teacher who supports them with her physical presence in the classroom.

All in all, my experience from working with this company has been overwhelmingly positive. Bearing in mind that it is a startup, teacher feedback is always welcome, changes are always being made so as to facilitate foreign staff and there is an obvious development that shows a promising future. Another important point is that experienced and hardworking teachers are awarded accordingly and there is much incentive in the direction of professional development. Coming to work here was a good choice and not only was I amply compensated in a financial sense but also in the way I have developed as a teacher in view of developing educational technologies.

Ok, here is one more comment from someone who works for this company for 9 months now…I have never done this job before and still I managed to kick ass at the interview, just by watching videos on Youtube about ESL online teaching. So first step is to kick ass during an interview. You need to be a child in order to teach a child, so you have to be ready to be silly and use your silly voice, masks etc if you wish to do this job. I was contacted 24 hours after my interview, went through training for their processes and Classin platform that they use…mock up class and then I started working. I am on fixed schedule and was offered a fixed salary. I am very pleased with the company, if at any moment during class I have a problem – there is a whole team of people who will help me. There is also a TA in the classroom all the time. Easy job and for me very interesting. And the salary is competitive. The downside is that you need to plan your life months in advance, since we deliver our schedule a semester in advance. But it is manageable, you just need to plan your vacation few months in advance. Very cooperative colleagues, HR department, IT support…so far I have nothing but the best experience working for them. I have tried one more company and my experience is completely different. So please take into consideration opinion of the people who are hired by them, we are relevant to talk about them. As per training on hold till September – I am sure they will contact you in August to confirm September…it was not waste of time, you will not be going through training one more time…anyway I highly recommend them. Cheers!

I have been working with Waijiaoyi for a while now. They have really gone above and beyond for me. The office life is much easier when you have collegues who appreciate your talents and what you contribute to the project. The hours are not strenuous and management is reasonable and strive to assist whenever we feel tired or drained. They work to ensure we are comfortable in our positions and that we are taken care of by ensuring we have beverages and places to rest when we are not working. I really enjoy the training we receive when joining and on an ongoing basis, it helps me to broaden my skills while also ensuring we bond as a team. The work is the best part – Waijiaoyi are always moving above and beyond and reaching new milestones. They encourage us to be creative and support this by buying whatever we need to make our dream come alive in the green room. They listen to ideas and implement them quickly, always happy to provide praise and credit.

I have never even started working with Waijiaoyi, but I’d like to leave a review as they’ve wasted a lot of my time – I had to wait quite long to get any feedback about whether or not interview/demos went well, and even then they had to send corrections of their own decisions. I’ve heard some tutors had better luck this season, whereas some others were treated the same way I was treated. Since I’m NNES, I’ve first double and triple-checked all FB groups I could find, as most Chinese companies stomp all over NNES expecting them to work for a bag of rice. In some groups with tutors from the Balkans, there were some screenshots shared of Waijiaoyi team members posting everywhere, stating how the offer for hourly rate has recently increased to $13 or more for non-natives. Albeit, when you ask in your interview about it, they straight out tell you it’s fake and that people from Balkans can only hope for $9-11. They just automatically offer you $11/h without even letting you do demos first before sending the offer. So if you have teaching experience and a degree and certificates and a good accent, you will be offered the same rate as someone whose pronunciation sounds like they’re practising for a role of a Russian spy from the Bond franchise. They don’t cover PayPal fees, so PP fees will be deducted from tutors’ salaries in its entirety each time. Also, some tutors even posted statements on FB how they weren’t paid for the mandatory trainings once they’ve started working, as well as that they received random phone calls over night.
I wish I’d known about all of these pages earlier, I wouldn’t have went through all of this ordeal over nothing. It’s good that tutors share information online, especially over Facebook, as that way we can at least warn each other.
    Stay safe, peeps!

    Highly unprofessional company.
Firs they send me an email that I was hired , then the second one comes shortly after the first one that it was a glitch in the system for some reason and to dismiss my first email, and then comes the third that I am not hired…
Company is a joke people and this is no hate talk, this is my experience. Don’t waste your time and money on them 🙂

Most students respond to a visual style of learning which VR is more than able to provide.

The keyword is “student engagement”. I find it very fascinating to use this method as I clearly see how it benefits my learners in different ways. This trend has started in China and I didn’t waste time considering this position. We were just few when we started in Waijiaoyi’s Beijing office but now, we are close to a dozen.

The company assisted us in finding a cozy housing and helped processing our working visa. It’s not all just work as we have 2 days off and we get to tour around the city and its neighboring cities/provinces. Communication is not a problem as well as almost everyone in the office are conversant in English.

    Waijiaoyi is a good find.

  • Ana

The prospect of using Class VR is so exciting for me as a teacher. It provides an opportunity to stimulate the pupils in ways that were never possible before.

I have been a traditional classroom teacher for almost a decade and this groundbreaking technology isn’t very difficult to consider and adapt knowing how it increases not only the children’s engagement with learning, but their motivation to discover and explore.

Waijiaoyi is a company I would recommend as they have so far met my expectations of what a credible school is.

  • Holy

I recommend Waijiaoyi for ESL Career Opportunity. It has a good pay rate and the schedule they offer is convenient. The company has a good credibility based on what I hear from fellow teachers. It has a good company culture too since it is open to Natives and non-native English Speakers. Come and feel young teaching with Waijiaoyi.

  • Maria

It has been more than 2 years of wonderful experience working for Waijiaoyi. I am so glad I chose this company over other online teaching companies out there. I had ample of choices when I started but I decided to try this company. I am so glad I did. I hope I can stay in the company for as long as I want. More power to the management!

  • Lala

I have been a part of Waijiaoyi for a year now. This amazing company gives bonuses, incentives and support to its teachers. We are trained every week and valued exceptionally. The opportunity working with Waijiaoyi is incomparable. The management is easy to reach and the team is competetive. Level-up your experience. Join Us Now!

I work on various different platforms and I love working at Waijiaoyi. I was hired quickly and was able to complete the training and probationary period very quickly. They pay on time and have an awesome support system. They also offer ongoing trainings and Chinese classes for teachers. The pay is a little lower than some companies, but higher than others. However, the classes are super fun and the kids are great! I really like it. I have seen some really bad reviews here, but I have not seen any of that. I started in the middle of a semester and had classes booked right away. It is important to note though, that the classes for the schools are booked by semester so if you apply in the middle, it is possible that it may take longer to get classes. At this time, though, they have been adding a lot of schools. This is an excellent company to work for and they are very helpful. Anyone who says otherwise must not be used to working with Chinese companies. Please understand that this is not an American company and you can’t expect that they will always do things “the way you are used to”. They will however be super supportive in explaining why they do things the way they do and always will take input from teachers and staff. I would definitely recommend working here.

  • Elizabeth

Waijiaoyi is a company that inspires its employees to work hard and be more passionate about the job. I have been in the company for more than 2 years now and the company has never failed to amaze me. I had difficulties sometimes but I appreciate the management’s efforts in giving support. I would like to be part of the company as long as I can. More power to the management!!!

  • Oliva Monge

As a Resource Adviser, I underwent challenges at work most especially this month. But, I never lost my spirit because of my teammates who continuously encouraged and motivated me to just keep on pushing on the goal.

Being part of a collaborative team is one of the best things to have at this kind of job. They give you support to work harder and they bring out the best in you.

  • Cheska

It has been 2 years of an amazing teaching career at Waijiaoyi. I love the management’s effort in providing support to teachers like me. They constantly give help when we need. They make sure to listen to every concern that we have. Kudos to them! I hope they will continue doing that.

  • Anne

Being part of Waijiaoyi team is an honor. It’s an opportunity I don’t want to lose and give up. I work from the comfort of our home, taking care of my family while I am earning. The staff are approachable and really help me when I needed assistance. The company pays well and give the right benefits. So for those who are looking for an online job, come and join us.

  • Ine

I’m an ESL Teacher at Waijiaoyi where I enjoy guaranteed teaching hours. Being up and working during wee hours in our country totally worth it. As for my 1 year over-all experience, I am satisfied with Waijiaoyi’s treatment to its employees. We have bonuses and the working environment is competitive yet healthy. Proven that teachers from Waijiaoyi are highly in demand and that’s what makes me feel really special.

  • Edz

Working for Waijiaoyi is one of the good things that ever happened to me. I was hesitant at first in joining this company but because of my friend’s suggestion, I gave it a try. I am so happy I took that chance. I am hoping to work in this company as long as possible.

  • Lala

Hi, I would like to share my personal experience with Waijiaoyi. I am working for Waijiaoyi for a year now as an ESL Teacher. I am happy and satisfied knowing my students learned about the lessons I teach. The rate is acceptable and the bonuses are exciting! Weekend schedule is very convenient for me although the timezone is different. The co-teachers and higher management are really nice. We are given a chance to celebrate some of the occasions even we have a different culture.

Expect the unexpected because this company will develop your teaching skills with modern strategies .

  • Edz

Working for WAIJIAOYI has been an amazing experience so far. I can say that I am very satisfied with what I get in exchange for my service. So far, it has been the best company I have had in my entire career. And I don’t see any reasons to leave the company. I hope the company will keep providing good service to both students and teachers.

  • Lany Cruz

Waijiaoyi is a credible online teaching platform I should say. I have never been disappointed since I started teaching with them. Since earning at home is a modern trend that can be tried by anyone who’s got passion to teach kids, I strongly recommend Waijiaoyi as they give fair chances to natives and non-natives respectively. I actually got to meet some of them through our weekly online training every Friday and everyone shares a mutual feeling; that Waijiaoyi is a family.
The values and memories we share is priceless.

  • Maria

Waijiaoyi is definitely the place to go. I am a non-native English speaker and yes, we can teach with them! Plus, respect is felt whatever
your nationality is. Their beliefs and values are admirable as racism has never been an issue.
You work with great people and you teach enthusiastic kids. Can’t think of anywhere else to go.

  • Edith

I have been working for WAIJIAOYI for almost 2 years. It has been a great experience so far. The pay is competitive, the staffs are accommodating and the culture is very encouraging. I also appreciate the company’s efforts in rewarding its teachers’ hard work. I’ve heard stories of unsatisfied teachers before so at first, I was hesitant to apply to this company. But since I was looking for a job, I took the risk. During my interview, I had the chance to ask my interviewer the questions I had in my mind. I was surprised that he didn’t deny any of them. He also told the company’s preventative measures. I am so glad I took the chance. Now I am very happy.

  • angel

I have started working for Waijiaoyi a couple of months ago and I’m so happy to have chosen this company. I would say it’s a dream job as I’ve never been in a working environment where staffs are accommodating and objective all the way. Although the atmosphere is quite competitive as you work with other highly qualified teachers, the admin makes sure that everyone gets as much bookings as the rest. Everyday is fun-filled and teaching does not feel like work. If you want a job where you’ll be smiling all day long despite of draining energy, then come along and be part of this company!

  • Mary Gonzales

Online teaching is the recent trend I tried.

Traditionally, teachers are usually required to follow a pre-designed curriculum and aren’t given much room for their own creativity. But As an ESL teacher, this can vary greatly.

With Waijiaoyi, although we are tasked to follow specific materials, the way we implement them is wholly dependent on us. It allows me more freedom to be as creative as I like as long as I am meeting the class goals.

This is one great thing I really enjoy doing as an artist and a teacher!

None to be honest. It’s just plain awesome!

    • Moxie

Hi Mariangeles, I decided against applying to Waijiaoyi after hearing the kinds of reports in these comments! I now teach for SayABC and really love it. I did a lot of research and decided they would be best ESL company – mainly because all the lessons are planned for you and they pay you well and on time! If you’re interested, you can see the website https://sayabc.co.uk for more info 🙂 good luck with your search!

  • jane

They sell you on something that doesn’t really exist; for a class of 15-20 students, the pay is low!

This company “advertises” a fixed contract rate of $280 USD to teach about 8 hours on Saturday and Sunday, but when you’re hired, they will tell you they don’t have that available. They will say they only have “hourly.” This white lie isn’t too bad, but what really upset me is the low pay for group classes. They want you to teach a group of about 15-20 students for “about” $21 U.S. dollars an hour. Because they do 25-minute classes, this works out to about $10.50 for a 25-minute class. THIS IS LOW PAY TO TEACH AN ENTIRE GROUP OF KIDS! That kind of pay rate they are offering is more akin to teaching 1:1 or 1:4 type of classes, NOT an entire class! Also, the above rates, are only “after” probation. So, on probation, your rate is even lower.

The other thing I don’t like is they require you to use Classin, Ding, and Skype. YOU HAVE TO ALWAYS open all these 3 programs because different employees will message you from all these different programs and it’s kind of annoying. I don’t know why they feel it’s necessary to use so many programs when they really only need to use one program to communicate with the teachers.

Also, you will notice a lot of their employees are “Filipinos,” and some of their English isn’t that understandable. I had difficulty understanding one of their employees a couple of times.

In conclusion, please stop telling new hires that there is a “fixed rate” available when you know it’s not. You all are just saying that to lure the teachers in. Please be honest about what you all are offering, and please pay an APPROPRIATE amount for teachers teaching an entire classroom of students. $10.50 for a 25-minute class of 15-20 students is low pay! You have to remember that we have to practice and plan the lesson of ahead of time, and we don’t get paid for that (lesson planning).

    • Wadja

That’s insane? Had you already sent them all your identification information? From all these reviews, I’m kind of wondering if this place isn’t just scamming for people’s personal information…

  • Mauricio

Wow I’m surprised with all those bad comments about the company. I’m going to make an interview soon but the comments pretty bad so I’m scared now.

  • Nikk

Recently, I received an email to apply and to work for this school. Since I am a non-native speaker, I’d like to hear experience from someone who is non-native and worked in this school or works in this school. In general I find a lot of conflicting reviews. Thanks a lot 😀

  • airbn

I smelled something fishy from the moment I made contact with them. I did the interview and mock class, and was immediately sent a list of ridiculous demands. They wanted a professional photo taken, contract signed, some background printed, and bunch of other stuff. They then sent me the training schedule like the day before it was supposed to begin and expected me to be there. I told them that I already had classes scheduled with my regular ESL company during those times. It took them a while to process that fact and I told them that it wasn’t fair to have these kinds of expectations on such short notice. Then, they changed the salary expectations after I had been told that I would be a salaried employee during the interview. They switched it to hourly and then got upset when I wouldn’t sign the contract without further information. Anyhow, after finally getting a schedule far enough in advance to plan accordingly, I went through the 1st “intensive training” class and that was enough. They literally expect you to prepare half of the lessons and create the material yourself. It’s kind of weird being “trained” by people who cannot even speak English without making basic mistakes (3rd person singular, plural, etc). I think I was the only Native English speaker that made it through the 1st training class (the only other one left mid class and never came back), and they have this odd relationship with people from Balkan countries (Serbia). After the first training session, I realized why they have to hire so many non-native speakers. There are better companies that have a much more consistent product and don’t require the teachers to create parts of the lesson themselves. It’s clear that a lot of the people in the training cohort couldn’t get jobs with other ESL companies because they were not native speakers. Seriously, our Filipino trainers couldn’t even speak perfect English. During the hiring process, if I did not answer their Skype questions immediately, they would call me from China/The Philippines. That’s like 2 or 3 am CST (my time). And this was during the hiring process, imagine working for these people. They showed us a flow chart of the leadership, and you have like 3 different bosses. Also, they use like 3 or 4 different platforms that most people from Western countries are not familiar with (Chinese developed). You have to sign in and out on different platforms and are required to have 3 or 4 programs running while you are working. Seriously, I remember they told us that they keep track of supposedly “everything” we do while we are available, and that any irregularity (change in internet speed, forgetting to message your team leader on the 3 or 4 platforms you have to have running, etc), will result in an immediate investigation, and that they will call you no matter the 13 hour time difference. It’s totally inefficient and their expectations are ridiculous. If you’re a native speaker from The US, Australia, Canada, UK, etc, don’t even waste your time. These people are crazy if they think native speakers are going to take direction about class quality and grammar mistakes from people who don’t even speak proper English. Don’t waste your time with these clowns. There are a lot of other Chinese companies to choose from.

    • Ana

Thank you for your review of the company .I am getting ready to apply for it but now I have doubts .Mozesh li mi reci gde mogu da pronadjemslicne kompanije u Kini koje rade po istom on line principu ?Unapred hvala

  • Michael Thompson

The company is badly managed with absolutely no input from the supposed “management”. They ignored teachers who went through the whole hiring process because they lied about how many classes they would have and then just booted them from the program. Their policies are non-existent and there is a neverending stream of micromanagement. Avoid this company, there are many better companies out there. There is some strange relationship they have with Serbia as 98% of their teachers are from there, I am unsure why and yes, they will not hire anyone who is not white, most of their teachers are not qualified to teach and are sold to schools as native speakers yet have such distinct accents that the schools complain that they cannot understand them. Yep, stay away, stay away!

  • HBC

VERY VERY unprofessional. Kept me on a hook for 3 months. After doing the same training over and over, they just sent an email that your contract has been cancelled. They even made me get a backdrop printed, did a screen test and a computer check on the Friday. Wednesday an email – contract cancelled – even before I started teaching!
They are CLOWNS!!!!!!! Stay as far away as possible!!!!!!!!!!

    • roxana cozma

Very unprofesionl. I did the training all the demo classes, you will have to download different platforms because they will talk with you through zoom , class in , ding talk , skype, email ….. they are all over the place. After I told them that they are unprofessional and I refused to print the backdrop until I was sure I was teaching they toild me that they hired to many teachers and they don’t too many classes to offer. STAY AWAY FROM THEM … THEY WILL WASTE YOUR TIME

  • Samantha

I had a very bad experience with them. They strangled me for 4 months, I invested so much time and effort and even money to print their background and upgrade my equipment, and they promised that I will start to teach several times. Finally they sent me an e-mail that they don’t have enough classes and they fired a lot of us. Disgrace! They are so unprofessional and rude.

  • Fred

the funny part is I they invited me for interviewing I passed the 2 steps (first interview – Practice class) in the end I received an email that I was failed then I replied that According to my last report I passed the interview then they apologised me and said it was our fault but recruiting period is over… I was shocked after 1 month daily effort I was empty handed with their apologies… their trainers are so jealous and unprofessional once I was trying to use manyCams and other apps for bringing new atmosphere the guy said stop it so rudly then he added ” it’s so creepy” I just changed my background and that was picture of the space …that was I all, then he wrote in his report that the candidate cant fulfill our needs but next time I did the same with another trainer and she was amazed and said I can teach right away…. but as I said unprofessional unprofessional unprofessional….

  • Andy

This company is the worst ever. I had the same experience as Lynn and on top of it thry won’t pay me. Steer clear of these clowns seriously. This company is a joke. A bad one!

  • Lynn

I just went through the application process, it is a bit confusing, they interview you via skype, and then have you go through 4 hours of training, after that a practice class, a demo class. I did it all, and then they sent an email saying we would have to wait till September to get booked because all slots are full…. I was so mad, such a waste of time and effort, they make you send 1 min videos, photos, documents. The admins depends on who you get, sometimes they do not even answer the question…. you email but no one emails you back. Waste of time and effort

    • Selma

Hello, I was considering applying for this job, but I couldn’t find a lot of reviews for this company, could you share a bit more about your experience?

  • SYEDA RUMMAN

It really does not matter how fluent you are ,or what a great teacher you are , they will not hire you if you are brown skinned ,just like all Chinese companies . Why Chinese people are so racist ,what connection does my skin tone have with my English proficiency or teaching skill ?
