Orange Talk

Orange Talk Review

Orange Talk (website is down) is hiring teachers to teach groups of Chinese kindergarten students. They will consider non-native English speaking teachers if their English is perfect/neutral, but they prefer North American native speakers. They also want teachers with a bachelors degree. A TESL certificate is preferred but not necessary, same with teaching experience. Classes last 25 minutes and you could be teaching from 8 to as many as 30 students per class. The interesting thing about this job is that you are required to stand for the entire class. I guess this makes you appear more like a typical school teacher. Their peak teaching time is in the Chinese mornings (8-11pm EST) Monday to Friday, there are also classes on the weekends during all times. Orange Talk pays $16 – $22 USD per hour depending on your qualifications and how well you do in your interview and demo.

Overall, it’s a good company but once you’re hired, don’t expect too much. They offer a very low salary for non native speakers. The booking is really low too. I heard about some new non native teachers complaining of having only less than 10 classes a month. There’s no base rate. You have to be really good to get more bookings. That means a lot of TPR because you are teaching a group of very young Chinese students with almost zero English. You have to be energetic the whole time because if not, the students will lose interest (very young kids have very low attention span).

There’s a Chinese teacher monitoring your class on the other end as well since you will be working with a group of students inside a classroom. Also, you only get to teach during the day (China time) so that is a bummer for Asians who have full time work during the day and for Westerners you might have to teach late at night (depending on your location) because classes usually start at 9 am China time.
