NativeCamp

NativeCamp Review

NativeCamp <—- (Click here to Apply) is looking for English teachers from the Philippines to teach Japanese adults. A university degree is not necessary and teaching experience is not required but they do want teachers with a neutral accent. Teaching hours are from 9am – 9pm. Apparently the pay is not great, according to the comments here $1.5 – $2.5 USD per hour and they pay twice per month with BPI or PNB. There are some bonuses if you stay with the company.

Please leave us your comments and reviews of NativeCamp.

Finished my first week on NC. Earned 32 dollars. Pay is awful, you can’t earn good money here. I was legit on my computer 8 hours a day on standby when it was “rush hour(a lot of students looking for classes”, but it didn’t matter, u can get 1 class in 2 hours max. Pay is 1.5 per sudden class and 1.67 for booked class that the students keep on canceling all the time just because they can. On top of that i was super polite with every student, tried my best and my rating is 4.31 because some kid who refused to do exercises and was playing games on his phone gave me 1 star. NOT WORTH THE MONEY OR THE TIME. Maybe some other platforms pay better, but to go through all this just to earn 100-200dollar a month MAX is just complete waste of time.

I can’t believe you’ve made only 32usd in a week. I’ve been teaching with NC for 3 months and take 8-15 classes a day. I have it as a side job, just to fill in the time between my other lessons, but it still gives me 400-500usd every pay period. I’m sorry to hear you ear so little.

  • Desiree

Hi. NC is a company that I would definitely not recommend. Firstly, they are extremely quick to confront you if something is mildly wrong but they make bleeps all the time ie not getting salaries correct, being cut off in the middle of a class, sudden deactivation….not good. The worst is the pay. I cannot believe that in today’s world a company can be happy to pay their tutors almost nothing. They are constantly employing new tutors do they are now saturated with very few lessons for anyone. No!

  • Ahti ajit

Good day. I am a new instructor with NC however I haven’t started teaching. I would like to ask a question about the schedule in the app.
Is the schedule in the teacher’s timezone or in NC’s default timezone?

    • Jessica Claire Barends

the schedule is in your time. but there havent been students online for weeks. honestly you going to be wasting your time here. plus many teacher have now been complaining abot the fact that money hasnt been paid after a booked lesson. or that the total amount hasnt been paid. better to find another comapny than waste your time here

  • Ronah

I applied and passed the English proficiency test. I went through a technical check and I was directed to account information completely. Is this a glitch?

  • Lilith

I have applied and passed the so-called demo lesson (They checked my camera, background, headset etc, and asked to read a self-introductory bio). Thanks to their arrogant notes I bought a better laptop and headset.
Well, it was not so hard to be admitted. The poor thing is the salary. 1,5$ is not worth trying. Even if I am currently working for the Russian company Skyeng, they pay miserable money now, when rubles have cheapened a lot, I won’t work for such a company with penalties like; if the student doesn’t show up 0-24 hours prior to the lesson you are charged the full price for a 25-minute lesson. I spent a lot of time doing their tests and questionnaires. I’d been confused about the salary before applying. If you see my data there, I am not there. They seem not to delete the personal data of resigned teachers.

I am still teaching in this company and I got issues now. My account has been deactivated twice now . First apparently students do not think i am native enough. So I had to send in my documents such as passport, TESOL certificate and high school diploma for the company to insure that I studied in an English speaking country. Second issue is now my nationality with native speakers in the company again thinks I am not a native speaker. So like what now? My nationality is Canadian. Yes I am Filipino because I was born in the Philippines but I am a Canadian citizen now.
I have been living in Canada for 21 years now and I have been working for this company for 5-6 months now and they are addressing this issues now? Such a weird company.

    • Jana

Hello Jina. I’m sorry to hear about your experience with NC. You should be paid as a native, 4,16usd for sudden class, 8,98usd for a booked class. How come you are paid so little? I was also born in another country, but grew up in Australia. They’ve never asked for my passport nor any other proof and classified me as a native speaker straight away. Try sorting this out, as you are missing out on a better rate.

  • Stay away from Native camp

I did all sort of jobs in the past. Some were nice, some were less nice, and then I heard about Native camp. You work from your home, teach English, work as much as you want, meet some nice people. It sounds like a perfect job, right? Wrong!!!! They have many rules at Native camp, like you can’t ask students personal questions, however they can ask you personal questions. They can also choose not to show their face and you are not allowed to tell them to show themselves. They pay very little. 1,5 $ per class or if it is a booked class then it is 2,5 $. They like to punish teachers because teachers are those who are being payed so they have to take the fall. Unlike students who are paying and therefore no matter what they do, nothing will happened. Another bad thing is that students are giving grades to teachers, and if they are not happy, don’t like how you look or for any reason, they give you bad grade and your rating goes down. Students are from Japan. I had some nice students, but I also had some real jerks. Some older woman told me that there will be some students that will not be that nice. Preety quickly her words came true. There was a student that really sucked and they are all proud and don’t like when you correct them. During the class student started talking in Japanese. I don’t speek Japanese language but I do know how to read people’s faces and that student made a face like: this teacher is stupid and I will show that nobody messes with me. After that class my ratings went down. There was a student that didn’t want to show his face because he wanted to talk bad things about Chinese people and he wanted me to do the same. I know that Chinese and Japanese don’t like each other because they have bad history, but that doesn’t mean I should talk bad stuff about anyone. There was a student that asked me all sort of stuff and in the end of a class he called me a liar and gave me a bad grade. That was a dick move from him. Most of the students don’t really care about teaching English. Japanese are lonely people and they need to talk to someone. One student sounded like he wants to kill himself. I am not a psychiatrist, I don’t know how to deal with people that are in a desperate mood. No matter what I asked him all I got from him was: Yes, No, Don’t know, Kind of. And he was speaking really quiet. When I asked him to speak a little louder because I can’t hear what he says, he stopped talking. I look at the time and there is more then 16 minutes left. Oh boy this class will sure take time to end. I couldn’t leave the class because if class is ended sooner the teacher is the one who is guilty. That happened with another student. We had a nice chat , everything seemed nice and 3 minutes before time runs out he said I have to go and hanged up. My ratings went down because of that. There is a rule 1 student per class. When class started I saw small kids, and I mean really small kids. I didn’t know who is my student and they didn’t even use headphones so I could hear my voice in the echo. I could see a woman behind them and my guess is that she needed a babysitter so told them to call Native camp. I am not a babysitter. Entire class kids were running around and doing everything but talking English. When the class was over my ratings went down again. The worst of all was when they have sent me an email telling me they have deactivated my account because i am the worst teacher. Strange thing is that every single time i was able to see 2 teachers bellow me with worse ratings then mine. So i asked them about that if they could explain how am i the worst when there were teachers with rating 3.87 and my rating never went bellow 4.17. Their answer was what am i going to do about my behaving. Stay away from Native camp. Don’t say i didn’t try to worn you.

    • Zandile Mcanyana

Worst experience, did my demo twice, the woman, kept sneezing, saying she can’t hear me, where I could hear her very well, most rude person I have ever come across, with my luck she did both my demos, a real demon, I must say, sneaky innocent voice, can’t even say teacher properly, kept saying teacher, they should check their own accents, I must say.overall pathetic, her name is Cristy, that’s even her name.

    • Kelisha

Same! I had my first system check and they said my headphones were low and that I had to do it again! I’m pretty sure my headphone was fine, never the less I will try again. It was also close to the end so maybe that’s why…idk.

  • kimmy

hi guys I am waiting for my account to be activated, so I can start work. I am here to affirm my future teaching experience 🙂 NC will be good to me, the overall experiences the lovely student and the amazing pay! I will enjoy my time on this company and will be generally happy about my pay and work environment! wish me luck:)

  • Alex

After going through an awkward long process of waiting in line to have the camera check and than to have someone from the staff asking me to give a short presentation of myself!!! Voila suddenly my account is active, now what happens. I am currently on the second day of waiting online for a student. I am starting to fill that this thing does not work. There must be some sort of fraud or they hire to many teachers considering that you do not have to be a native English speaker.
I mean I find it weird that the Mid-peak time shown on the schedule tab is 3:00 Am in Japan???? Do this people not sleep, do they study English at night?? Either I read things wrong or this whole thing is a scam…
Wish I could find another platform worth my time and that at least pay 5$ per lesson. Not that here I am making any money to start with but I would even be willing to give a few lessons for free and know for sure that than I will be paid once confirmed that I am a good enough instructor. I do not think that is asking too much.
Anyway it would be helpful if anyone could suggest a reliable platform where they would accept people that want to teach English but do not have any qualification on the field or experience.

  • Ozzy

Awful…pay is very low, they hire too many teachers because there is not a single criteria for you to enter there. Then you wait for hours to have some classes…with every month it is getting worse and worse…and if your rating fall below 4.95, you will not have any chance to improve it at all. Very bad. The only good thing is an easy platform and the flexibility of the schedule. All the rest is bad.

  • Robin

If you are in America, the pay is way, way, way below minimum wage. Most tutors are Filipino, so the pay is better for them. I loved the students and enjoyed the freedom. It would have been perfect for me if I could survive on the wage. It’s less than $6 per hour, class is 25 minutes plus writing a review for $2 and some change per 25 minutes. (It’s less than $3, but I don’t remember exact amount) I got practice there. I asked for wage increase, they would not pay more when they could hire people not in America.

    • Joe Schmolensky

Not trolling you or being rude but the pay for Filipinos is substandard even for BPO work. The reason locals are preferred is they get way less pay than an actual navtive speaker. Japanese students don’t have to pay or full pay isn’t given if they don’t leave a rating or a good score. It’s a scam abused by the students to get free time with a teacher. Students will brag they’ve received 1000s of free classes which means teachers/tutors are being scammed.

  • Jenny

Joining NC needs a lot patience. And yes I am one of many English mentors here but so far the times of free flag is the most amazing times because after that you will suffer from low bookings/no bookings at all. They have their so called peak hours but only from 12:30am-7:00am so in my part, what will happen during 7:30am up until 12:00am? And it’s a quite a long time. So I decided to look for another platform that has a normal and regular students that can booked my opened slot. Nc is nice when you’re in your first week but after that time hello zero bookings.

  • Rachelle Bonita

I applied. I passed the proficiency test. I waited almost two hours to have it system check but I have been disconnected for 2 times already without a reason. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE STAFF ARE F*CKING RUDE!!!!!! WHEN I STARTED MY DEMO, SHE GO ANGRY BECAUSE SHE CANT HERE MY AUDIO WHERE IN FACT IT WAS CHECKED BY THE SYSTEM. F*CK THEM! YOU CANT EVEN TALK BECAUSE SHE DOES ALL THE TALK. I GREETED HER POLITELY AND WAITED FOR 2HRS TO GET THE F*CKING DEMO LESSON BUT RECEIVED A RUDE AND ANGRY STAFF!!!! THIS IS NOT A JOB FOR YOU GUYS.. IF YOU PLAN TO WORK ESL HOME BASE.. F*CKSHIT DONT APPLY THIS COMPANY.. YOULL BE GETTING SOME HIGH PAID ESL BUT THIS ONE.. F*CK THEM!

  • K

Hello Guys! I tried to join NC 2 days ago and fortunately I am already done with the demo class. I was on standby too for almost 2 hours. The first try was a fail and yes, I got a kinda rude admin as well. I tried it again in the afternoon around 5pm, the wait time is not that long compared to the AM schedule, and I got a very nice admin too. If you really want to pursue NC, you need a lot of patience. 😉 Good luck to all.

  • Kiki

I am also at the demo stage and everytime i enter sitting for hours , no one comes… the website says 15 mins stand by but i went past, still no one attends.

    • Leonidas

same here, are you already teaching in nativecamp? how long have you waited for someone to enter the demo classroom?

  • Sosoliso

Joining NC needs a lot patience. i went through a lot of stress getting registered & activated. Now i’m all set, Pls what strategies do i need to apply to get students to my lesson cos i’ve been on standby for a very very long time and no hope of my first lecture.. or is it because i’m african?

  • Kim

Hi guys so iv just started the process of joining NC I’m not at Demo-lesson stage but omg it take so long iv been sitting on here for hours with no1 coming on to do the Demo-lesson can someone please assist me, is this normal????????

  • Oscar

How long did it take for you guys to receive your first deposit after the pay date… I’ve been waiting for 5 business days now and nothing yet…

    • Jana

If the cut of is the 15th, pay day is on the 25th. I the cut off is at the end of the month, the pay day is on the 10th. Works like clock work. I’ve always been paid on time and never had an issue.

  • deyb

I don’t know if this happened to anyone but i was not given any student to do the demo lessons with during my application. I was just told to memorize a short spiel and recite it in the camera. I passed on my second try because I was speaking too fast on my first but overall it was an easy experience. Now I’m just waiting for my account to be activated. May I ask how long should I wait for the activation process, and also how’s the payment method? Can i get paid thru Paypal?

    • Maja

I heard that was a promo, like no demo lessons for 2 or 3 days. You are the lucky one :D. Also, you can get paid now via direct bank deposit. There is no need for Paypal anymore.
Today I sign up for NC, I passed the test. Now I am waiting for System Check. Unfortunately, they are not working now. I have to come back later.
Because of the all covid-19 situations they are busy and probably they can not do the activation process immediately. Let me know how did it to go with that and with your first class. Good luck!

      • king

The real problem is not when youre gonna pass or not, because as long as you have the requirements YOU WILL PASS. The problem is getting students. Waiting for them to enter your class is almost IMPOSSIBLE. I HAVE BEEN ON STANDBY FOR 2 DAYS DURING ON-PEAKS STILL GOT NO STUDENTS. IT SUCKS.

    • Roberta

Exactly happend to me.I had no demo lesson but just a short introduction and to read the short paragraph and say it in the camera. I pass it for the first time and now I am waiting for my account to be activated. I also download the app on my android but I can’t log in. It says it’s wrong email or pass, but I am sure it is the correct one. Do you know what should I do and may you tell me how long should I wait for the activation process?

    • Jina Densing

Hello, I had that too. I thought there will be an interview but same as you, I had to memorize a bit of a spiel and I have been working there for 6 months now, but my account deactivated 2x because apparently i am non native and asked to change my nationality, but I can’t when I only have a Canadian passport. Why are they addressing this issue now?
      Such a crappy company.

  • Danny

I was surprised when I read this comment. I just started working with them, it’s my first week and they pay me from 1.5-2.0 $ per lesson. After that I will get from 2.5-8 $ depending on the lesson as well as my rank. Plus there is a bonus and also promo weekends, you can earn monthly up to 800$.
My demo lessons (there were also two) were easy, I made a mistake in first one in the review part, but the instructor was really helpful. The first day I started working I had 12 sudden lessons and most of those students booked me, I didn’t expect to have so many students and I thought ok, I was lucky, but after a week it’s the same, so I’m really satisfied l.
The students are nice and funny, all you need to do is follow the rules which are normal for me and it’s not that difficult at all. If you do that you will get the best grade. I only had one student that left the lesson after 14 minutes because I corrected his pronunciation in free talking lesson, he got upset said goodbye and gave me a low grade, but that wasn’t bad for me because everyone else gave me excellent grades and still book me.
I like NC and their programs.

      • Jana

USD we’re talking about and it’s not diffcult to make $800 – $100 (even more) with NC. I have it as a side job, just to fill in my time between my own students and make $400 -$500 in a pay period (15 days).

  • Ana Dzidziguri

hey guys, does any of you know how to connect paypal account to native camp so that they pay you through paypal? thank you in advance 🙂

    • Niko

You don’t have to anymore. They are paying now via direct bank deposit and they are taking care of bank provisions so you’ll be paid exactly what you make

        • Faith

It’s thru gcash now. They’re probably too lazy to transfer it via bank. I suggested that they can transfer it to my bank, but they insisted that I should have gcash instead.

  • Sasha

I’ve been checking their reviews online on websites like Glassdoor and Indeed because I’m considering give this company a try. I’ve been checking the aforementioned websites since summer 2019 and what I noticed recently (since a few weeks ago) is that their rating on Glassdoor increased from 3 point something to 4 stars. Also, the percentage of approval of the CEO increased surprisingly to 94%. What drew my attention and made me feel really suspicious about this sudden increase is the involvement of the management on the website. It seems like they leave a reply for every evaluation they get, either thanking for the positive review or promising that they will improve. If you look closely at their replies, you will notice that they are exactly the same, as if they just copy and paste them. If the management really cares about teachers’ opinions and they take them into consideration in order to improve, then it’s really nice. However, this sudden change in their behavior on the rating platform followed by the sudden increase in their rating, makes me feel a bit suspicious. I feel like they are either asking their staff to write fake positive reviews or requesting their employees to give them positive evaluations in order to improve the image of the company online. If that’s the case, it’s a bit disappointing. My question is, has something really changed in the company over the past few months and it is more attractive to work there now, or this is only their strategy to attract new teachers?

    • Afro ESL

Same here. I interviewed countless times with them, very rude interviewers. One of them refused to turn on her camera and kept coughing. apparently she was sick but that did not stop her from being so rude. She kept interrupting, at some point she ended the connection without informing me.
I was discouraged for a really long time and refused to apply to any other company.

  • Maria

I am working with Native Camp for a while now as I started it as to gain both confidence in teaching online and experience. I knew about their extremely low pay rate, which is 1.54 USD/ 25 mins lesson, however, I had the motivation of learning.

For me, the demo lesson was simple and I passed from the 1st try. I advise anyone to learn and use the steps in the introduction and then it’s all written in the lesson, you simply need to follow the lesson.

In my first day of work here, I was around for 14 hours and I was waiting so long for students, however, given my good ratings, I got students really fast afterwards. It’s really important to focus on your first lessons and it’s not about the materials, but about your attitude. Afterwards, you’ll increase your chances to have students all the time by acquiring all of the badges – which is really simple as you only need to pass some short and easy quizzes.

I’m now looking for other companies accepting Non-Natives cause this low pay means absolutely nothing for me. I can’t imagine this pay to be making more sense for any European citizen. If this company would be paying more, I wouldn’t mind anything. I like their platform and I also like the variety of lessons and teaching approaches.

When it comes to their students, I had a bad experience with one student only. The others are typically very polite and sometimes shy.

  • Mo

It’s nice to have teaching materials and to learn through demo lessons the class flow on their site. Easy to teach on it, you can come across those angry students that just dont like anyone, but thats rare to be honest, they are almost all very polite and shy. I always have a good laugh with them, and they cheer me up.
My only complain is the low cut per lesson, its exhausting to take 10 lessons per day which I didnt yet acomplished. Benefit of it is experience you get so you can move on to the next company which pays much better. I’d be satisfied even with atleast 3$-5$ per lesson since they dont require of you to have some great knowledge of english grammar, etc…
So yeah, I’m already looking into another companies with teaching materials, any suggestions (Im not a native speaker)

  • Amal

Native camp has actually too many students… It’s just that, students here prefer Filipino teachers because the pay is cheap.

  • James

Good lesson formats. Low compensation. What is killing me is the loooooong waiting time before I get some students. Today at 4pm, I’m still zero students and my butt hurts… I think there are more teachers here than students… I can’t even reach my goal earnings of $100 per cut-off. Maybe it’s time to find greener pastures somewhere else….

  • American In Cebu

Applied per the recommendation of a Japanese coworker (their spouse works for the company). The first few steps are pretty easy including the online test they give you (40 questions to be completed in 20 minutes – all multiple choice & only 2 were difficult for me but I passed 100%). Then came the difficult part. They give you 3 chances to pass their demo. Sounds easy right? Wrong! First they don’t activate their webcam so you can’t see who you are talking to. They have “Native Teachers” from Serbia working in their office in Cebu. Those “teachers” are also managers & some give you the demo. They sound Russian & even act the same (no enthusiasm). Now they do give you some demos to review & info but during the demo, you have to remember all the “rules”. First, greet your student…oh did I mention that if they don’t type their name, you are suppose to type it as to confirm it?! Yeah, found that out the 2nd time I took the demo (yes I failed the first time because I made some mistakes). Go figure, their demo video has a Filipina teacher using Japanese BUT their site says “ENGLISH ONLY” – so what’s that all about? Honestly I think they don’t want actual Native English Speakers because I was told we can earn $20 per hour ($10 per 25 minutes). Second, they have their instructions in the review materials but during the demo those instructions are not repeated so again you have to remember what you should do. My “demo student” complained about the “noise” (but in their video you can hear a lot of noise). They said this is because students are very critical of any sounds they hear during their lesson. Sorry but I can’t control everything around me, even when I have a noise cancelling headset some noises will be picked up. During my second demo, I was also told that I needed to be “more kind” in my criticism of student mistakes (mind you the “demo student” I had was one of their Filipino teachers this time). No where do they tell you what type of student you will have to react to (so you have to be more sided towards Japanese kids, even though I pointed out during the first demo she was not Japanese due to her accent). Oops… So it’s not so easy to pass the demo as another person pointed out & I’m hesitant to take the 3rd demo because who knows what issue they will pick up the final time. That’s why I found this site to try & find a better company to work for! NOTE: My coworker informed me that some of the students have managed to get teachers to cry because they can be very, very difficult. They are very critical as another person pointed out – pretending to be nice but after giving low scores. They have had a high turn over of teachers due to this because they side with students rather than teachers. Perhaps best to stay clear of them…

  • Carla

I’ve been working for Native Camp for a month. The platform is very good, there’s no class preparations and the students are very nice. The methodology relies on a lot of repetition, which is not exactly my style, but I don’t have any problems with it. They pay regularly twice a month through PayPal, however, the hourly payment is very low, and this is my only complaint. I’m there to complement my monthly income until I finish my probation period in another website I’m teaching.

  • Dana

I have been working for Native Camp for several months now, and I find their platform quite good. They have structured lessons, grammar, speaking, business, free-talking etc but they actually need a proofreader to correct many mistakes that are present. I cannot compare it to any other ESL school, as I haven’t had any previous online teaching experience. As for the students, I like them very much, they are kind and polite, I had only one negative experience. The pay is regular, you receive a pay check, but the amount is SO LOW that it doesn’t make sense. Working for Native Camp can be useful to gain some practice and then move on to some better paid online ESL job.

  • Barbra

I’ve never worked for the company, but I’ve talked with people who used to teach there, and I’ve met a lot of their former students. Their criteria is actually quite low, both the ex-teachers and the Japs think so. Japanese have complained that, even though they are aware they paid a mere pittance, they expected a better service. The who want to study, move on to better schools, even though they have to pay more. Psychos remain.
That’s basically the sum of all that I’ve heard

  • Nikola

DO NOT APPLY! This school is like a living hell! The pay is 1,54 dollars for 25 minute class. But what is worse, your score needs to be above 4.7 otherwise there is a chance you will be deactivated. A lot of people are struggling with this because crazy Japs are giving you the lowest possible score just because they can and because each of them is sadistic monster. They will tell you the class went perfect, see you again, but when you check the score, you will be surprised. I had a girl who booked my classes every Sunday just to give me 3 stars which completely ruined my score. Please if you need money, do something else, do not apply at this sick company. You are going to get some illness because of the stress. Believe me, I have a 5 year experience in this job and this is the worst company ever. Somebody should shut them down!

    • juliana

I have been working for a year at Native Camp, and that is not true. they are very regular with our payments.
Salary may not be very satisfactory but they are the most regular company, and they pay you even for seconds.

      • ngoni

HI, i am now waiting for my account to be activated. How long does that take? and how long do you have to wait to get students?

        • Justin

Actually, they are not following up with payment issues. I have had enough with this company. Some teachers may enjoy losing money after working for many hours by the company telling them that they are not going to send the appropriate amount even though the teacher worked their targeted hours and exceeded those hours, they still don’t pay the amount that is shown to be paid. This is tantamount to theft and I do not appreciate it at all.

  • Maya

their website gives you a 20 mins grammar test which is quite easy. Then you proceed to an online webcam check, so as soon you click on it, it will direct you to an actual person checking your cam and sound (so wear clothes!). Tried twice and both times the managers were rude and abrupt saying my cam is bad and so is my sound (given that Ive been teaching online with no probs) without any suggestions or help. Apparently they give you only couple chances to show off your cam quality and then dismiss you.
