Likeshuo Review

Likeshuo <—- (Click here to Apply) is affiliated with Meten and based in Shenzhen, and they teach Chinese children aged 5-17 and adults as well. They want native speaking teachers to commit to 20 hours per week. Most teachers earn between 64RMB to 80RMB per hour with a maximum of 90RMB per hour. So that is about $9.50RMB to $13.50USD per hour depending on bonuses. You can send your CV to yvonne_tyn@meten.com.

Please leave us your comments and reviews of Likeshuo.

  • Likeshuo management staff ran away in November 2022, deactivated our accounts and didn't pay the teachers for 2 months..... Unfortunately, teachers couldn't get any legal assistance though they all had contracts and paid taxes.... Managements staff should be jailed .....

  • DO NOT even consider working for these lying, thieving jackoffs. They owe me and thousands of other teacher 2 months salary, and they also didn't pay their Chinese staff. Disolved the company and did a runner with the loot. You have been warned!

    • Not surprising! Be warned further. They are still in business and operating the kids side of the business LikeABC as normal. They still have the same stupid ranked payment system and low paid classes but now it is even worse. Given they screwed everyone in Likeshuo, anyone who chooses to work for their kids platform knowing this is a fool to themselves.
Stay well away and run to the hills screaming!!!

  • They just introduced an alleged 6% tax and stated it is a government rule for VAT! WHata crock of BS!! There is no requirement to pay VAT in this way in China, I did some checking on the mainland.
It is also interesting to note, and I am sure so coincidental of course, that if you calculate minus 6% from the class fee rate it works out almost exactl to lower the payment from one band rate to the next lower band.
Group A, the highest payment, was as follows:

    Group classes 90RMB - 1v1 72RMB

Deduct 6% of that and you are left with 84.6RMB and 67.68RMB. Sound familiar to anyone working here? That is approximately the payment for group B, 85RMB and 68RMB! In other words what they have done is again lower the payment across the board, eradicating group A. Group A is now basically group B and so on.

This company is a lying, cheating craphole just like the majority of Chinese schools. ESL has often been and continues to be a dodge and hustle for the most despicable crooks in that country. It will close down any time soon for sure. Students complain regularly on the blog page here and I have seen conversations on Chinese social media about them recently. The rumors and talk from students alone is likely enough to bring this place down now because no one wants to take on a contract anymore. They all remember Webi collapsing and are unwilling to have the same happen to them.

Shit school, shit staff, shit management and shit material full of grammar mistakes, bad spelling and meaningless topics half the time. You stand about as much chance of learning English here as you would trying to learn English from a group of monkeys!

    • I tried to apply several times and received no confirmation codes and, yes, I checked the spam folder. In other words, it may already be defunct or perhaps just circling the drain.

    • I have noted that quite a few teachers who left the company still have active accounts and are earning points month in month out, just check some in the top 10! I know some have quit and in some cases months ago. I have seen fake teacher accounts in the system before. Teachers who follow zero students, have posted nothing at all on the blog page since starting and are followed by about 12000 students. Definately something wrong with that picture. It is obvious that the management are running those accounts to limit the amount of teachers they have to pay bonuses and higher rates.
I'll bet this place is gone within months. I suggest anyone fool enough to continue here has a back up plan because when they go they will take whatever they owe you with them, just like every other joke school in China.

  • So far I've had a good experience with Likeshuo, it's absolutely a decent pay for a part-time job and I like it, but something that really bugs me is the obvious bias of some teachers. Some female teachers are tagged as beautiful. Why is that relevant? Moreover non-native teachers are being lied to that they can't teach levels 9-12, when others easily do so. I also heard they don't accept darker skinned teachers. This is an indication of a clear discrimination and it needs to stop. Obviously more beautiful people are being promoted and pushed forward when others, no matter how educated and capable you are, you're left at the bottom. It's disgraceful, distasteful and despicable.

    • Venaaaa, I believe the tags are added by students rather than the company. I was tagged as "handsome" despite not being so!

    • Students are complaining they cannot book any classes while at the same time teachers are not getting any bookings. What the hell has happened to this place? Avoid because they couldn't do a better job of destroying the place if they tried.

  • Likeshuo is the most UNPROFESSIONAL school ever.
Cathy is such an unethical and unprofessional advisor including Wesley.
They cancel your demo without letting the potential teachers know...she was late for 20min for the demo class and said she d provide an update on the demo.

Never did. Never ever did she reply to emsils
    .not even out of courtesy...

They call themselves training advisors ????

They want natives and they already have non-native teachers working for them?

    Outrageous!!!!

  • With the new ranking for payments and the fact you now get paid the least for a 1v1 class, performing well in this school is a waste of time. You'll get more 1v1 classes booked and less pay!!
Be an avergae teacher or better still, forget working here altogether!

    • I also noticed that some of the teachers in the top ten and rank A are fake profiles. If you can get to their page on the website you will notice they follow zero students, have zero posts but amazingly are always in the top ten ranking of teachers!
Another ploy to pay teachers less money and has been like that for a considerable amount of time, even before the recent policy changes...

  • Likeshuo is constantly changing its policies (the recent trend is not in the teacher's favor), so this information needs to be updated. Bonuses have been eliminated and pay has been reduced. While it is possible to earn up to 90 Rmb per class, only the top 10% of well-established teachers will earn this. The majority of teachers will earn 64 - 80 Rmb/class and will not get booked enough to earn more.

Do not expect to get booked for more than two classes most days until you work for several months and make extra efforts to get steady repeat students and then some of them must be willing to schedule in off-peak times (not easy). Remember that you must teach three classes and take one (unpaid) training each month to generate a paycheck.

I can only recommend Likeshuo if you have no other viable options, have never taught before, only want to teach adults, or don’t want to lesson plan AND are willing to tolerate double standards, disorganization, technical malfunctions, incompetence, clawbacks/fines, uncertainty about pay, having to CYA with screenshots, and being treated like an expendable soldier.

The GOOD: Lesson plans are provided, there are no “free trial” class requirements, most of the students are engaged/motivated, and ongoing training is offered (though required and unpaid).

The BAD: As a general guideline, expect every policy and scenario to be tilted against the teacher. Likeshuo does not promote a teacher-friendly environment or work experience.
    - The teaching platform is basic and limiting (think cheap Chinese knockoff of Skype).
    - Likeshuo’s website is not well optimized and technical issues are very common, which can create a stressful situation when attempting to login for a class.
    - If you experience a technical problem that makes you late you must screenshot with a timestamp no less than 5 min before the class and submit a written report.
    - If you are less than 5 min early, you are fined and deducted points.
    - If you are not logged in to the classroom by the start time your class will automatically be given to a substitute, so there is no possibility of being even one minute late and you will be fined 300% of your class rate and points will be deducted.
    - If you experience technical issues that prevent you from teaching, you are not compensated.
    - Your accrued points for the month determine your pay rate.
    - The point system lacks transparency and utilizes moving percentage targets, so you cannot be sure of how many classes you need to teach or points you need to get to increase your pay rate or what your pay rate per class will be until after the month is over.
    - The scheduling system uses an algorithm that is not transparent so you cannot be certain of how many classes will be booked in a day, week, or month - increasing your availability does not necessarily result in additional classes.
    - Don’t expect more than two classes a day until you have elevated your status...however that is mysteriously achieved.
    - They only pay by bank transfer and they charge 200Rmb to make the transaction.
    - They do not pay on time and do not inform you when payment is made or will be late.
    - While they are disorganized, dismissive, and dysfunctional, they expect excellence from you and will place the burden of proof on you or penalize you.
    - The Teacher’s Assistants are actually more like supervisors that are dismissive, disrespectful, and not available during peak hours.
    - The TA’s generally will only communicate via Ding text.
    - The tech support services is grossly incompetent.
    - Your TA is your only point of contact and cannot be changed, which is reflected in their lack of professionalism.
    - The lesson plans are definitely not constructed to a high standard and they expect you to supplement them.
    - Students usually book classes a few hours out, but you cannot cancel your availability if you are not booked (less than 24hrs in advance).
    - My friend, a more experienced and better teacher than me, was not hired after two attempts. The primary difference is that she is of a different race. I've been told that it is common to reject teachers with dark skin.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few things, but you can rely on this being an objective review. Now you have open eyes going into the situation if you decide to work at Likeshuo.

    • Confirmed! It is now official! You can earn more per hour stacking shelves in a supermarket or packing things in boxes than as a professional teacher in Likeshuo.
They are still charging the students the same prices and will likely increase them based on the same reasons they've given for reducing the teachers payments...
Bottom line is this, they WILL close. Very few teachers with ability will continue to teach here being replaced by the unqualified and those who should be taking classes not teaching them.
This will continue briefly until crunch time when the upper echelons of management make a dash of the door with whatever money they can before filing for bankruptcy. Web international is a good example of what will happen here.
I'd sooner have a no brainer, remedial job doing manual labor than continue teaching here. At least it would be guaranteed, sick pay, holiday pay and easy on the grey matter as opposed to earning way less than the minimum wage in most Western countries.
China's ESL is over as far as I'm concerned. It's not worth living there anymore and certainly not worth teaching remotely. It was always full of cutthroat greedy crooks anyway and those very people have finally brought it to it's bitter end.
There are always better options than Likeshuo. Sitting in the street begging springs to mind for one.

  • Read every negative comment above and multiply it times 100. The TA Solace is a very creative person at manifesting the most inept ability to lead and support her team. Praise should also go to Nick, Jarryd, and Katrina for the best all-around support of her actions and attempts to confound the confusion amongst the teaching team.

The company will give you the most sought-after tutorial lessons, a full schedule, and a clean monthly record. You will rise to the top 10% but because it pushes out one of the TA's special teachers they will cut your classes and your evaluation scores will be lowered so you do not get your level pay increase.

Now that they have been told to stop teaching children they are putting single young adults with no (zero) life experiences teaching topics like psychology, raising children, family relationships in marriage, job interviews and careers,etc.. It has become a clown circus. Dog and Pony, condescending, fake praise, and topics that are so difficult that even the teachers and students have no idea how to teach or learn from it.

Of course, if you have to explain the topic it makes you talk more and you will get penalized for that. You can have 1,000,000,000 5 star ratings and get two complaints in 30 days and terminated immediately. Such stupidity and loss of great income generators for the company.

The CEO has no clue what is going on, the teachers are stressed, the students cannot find the teachers they want, and the TAs are just drones with a talent for being rude and uncaring.

Avoid any job that is connected with Likeshuo or METEN. It is the same company.

  • I joined this company last month just before they lowered their base pay. To be honest, it would have still been better than what I am now making at iTutor, but I am averaging about 2 classes per week. My TA is MIA and gives me the shortest possible repsonses to my questions and concerns. They want you to market yourself on their stupid social network by making posts. Don't waste your time
