Likeshuo Review

Likeshuo <—- (Click here to Apply) is affiliated with Meten and based in Shenzhen, and they teach Chinese children aged 5-17 and adults as well. They want native speaking teachers to commit to 20 hours per week. Most teachers earn between 64RMB to 80RMB per hour with a maximum of 90RMB per hour. So that is about $9.50RMB to $13.50USD per hour depending on bonuses. You can send your CV to yvonne_tyn@meten.com.

Please leave us your comments and reviews of Likeshuo.

Likeshuo management staff ran away in November 2022, deactivated our accounts and didn’t pay the teachers for 2 months….. Unfortunately, teachers couldn’t get any legal assistance though they all had contracts and paid taxes…. Managements staff should be jailed …..

  • Wayne

DO NOT even consider working for these lying, thieving jackoffs. They owe me and thousands of other teacher 2 months salary, and they also didn’t pay their Chinese staff. Disolved the company and did a runner with the loot. You have been warned!

    • Anon

Not surprising! Be warned further. They are still in business and operating the kids side of the business LikeABC as normal. They still have the same stupid ranked payment system and low paid classes but now it is even worse. Given they screwed everyone in Likeshuo, anyone who chooses to work for their kids platform knowing this is a fool to themselves.
Stay well away and run to the hills screaming!!!

  • ESL

They just introduced an alleged 6% tax and stated it is a government rule for VAT! WHata crock of BS!! There is no requirement to pay VAT in this way in China, I did some checking on the mainland.
It is also interesting to note, and I am sure so coincidental of course, that if you calculate minus 6% from the class fee rate it works out almost exactl to lower the payment from one band rate to the next lower band.
Group A, the highest payment, was as follows:

    Group classes 90RMB – 1v1 72RMB

Deduct 6% of that and you are left with 84.6RMB and 67.68RMB. Sound familiar to anyone working here? That is approximately the payment for group B, 85RMB and 68RMB! In other words what they have done is again lower the payment across the board, eradicating group A. Group A is now basically group B and so on.

This company is a lying, cheating craphole just like the majority of Chinese schools. ESL has often been and continues to be a dodge and hustle for the most despicable crooks in that country. It will close down any time soon for sure. Students complain regularly on the blog page here and I have seen conversations on Chinese social media about them recently. The rumors and talk from students alone is likely enough to bring this place down now because no one wants to take on a contract anymore. They all remember Webi collapsing and are unwilling to have the same happen to them.

Shit school, shit staff, shit management and shit material full of grammar mistakes, bad spelling and meaningless topics half the time. You stand about as much chance of learning English here as you would trying to learn English from a group of monkeys!

    • Billy

I have noted that quite a few teachers who left the company still have active accounts and are earning points month in month out, just check some in the top 10! I know some have quit and in some cases months ago. I have seen fake teacher accounts in the system before. Teachers who follow zero students, have posted nothing at all on the blog page since starting and are followed by about 12000 students. Definately something wrong with that picture. It is obvious that the management are running those accounts to limit the amount of teachers they have to pay bonuses and higher rates.
I’ll bet this place is gone within months. I suggest anyone fool enough to continue here has a back up plan because when they go they will take whatever they owe you with them, just like every other joke school in China.

    • Joe

I tried to apply several times and received no confirmation codes and, yes, I checked the spam folder. In other words, it may already be defunct or perhaps just circling the drain.

So far I’ve had a good experience with Likeshuo, it’s absolutely a decent pay for a part-time job and I like it, but something that really bugs me is the obvious bias of some teachers. Some female teachers are tagged as beautiful. Why is that relevant? Moreover non-native teachers are being lied to that they can’t teach levels 9-12, when others easily do so. I also heard they don’t accept darker skinned teachers. This is an indication of a clear discrimination and it needs to stop. Obviously more beautiful people are being promoted and pushed forward when others, no matter how educated and capable you are, you’re left at the bottom. It’s disgraceful, distasteful and despicable.

    • Anon

Students are complaining they cannot book any classes while at the same time teachers are not getting any bookings. What the hell has happened to this place? Avoid because they couldn’t do a better job of destroying the place if they tried.

  • Ines

Likeshuo is the most UNPROFESSIONAL school ever.
Cathy is such an unethical and unprofessional advisor including Wesley.
They cancel your demo without letting the potential teachers know…she was late for 20min for the demo class and said she d provide an update on the demo.

Never did. Never ever did she reply to emsils
    .not even out of courtesy…

They call themselves training advisors ????

They want natives and they already have non-native teachers working for them?

    Outrageous!!!!

  • William

With the new ranking for payments and the fact you now get paid the least for a 1v1 class, performing well in this school is a waste of time. You’ll get more 1v1 classes booked and less pay!!
Be an avergae teacher or better still, forget working here altogether!

I also noticed that some of the teachers in the top ten and rank A are fake profiles. If you can get to their page on the website you will notice they follow zero students, have zero posts but amazingly are always in the top ten ranking of teachers!
Another ploy to pay teachers less money and has been like that for a considerable amount of time, even before the recent policy changes…

  • William

Likeshuo is constantly changing its policies (the recent trend is not in the teacher’s favor), so this information needs to be updated. Bonuses have been eliminated and pay has been reduced. While it is possible to earn up to 90 Rmb per class, only the top 10% of well-established teachers will earn this. The majority of teachers will earn 64 – 80 Rmb/class and will not get booked enough to earn more.

Do not expect to get booked for more than two classes most days until you work for several months and make extra efforts to get steady repeat students and then some of them must be willing to schedule in off-peak times (not easy). Remember that you must teach three classes and take one (unpaid) training each month to generate a paycheck.

I can only recommend Likeshuo if you have no other viable options, have never taught before, only want to teach adults, or don’t want to lesson plan AND are willing to tolerate double standards, disorganization, technical malfunctions, incompetence, clawbacks/fines, uncertainty about pay, having to CYA with screenshots, and being treated like an expendable soldier.

The GOOD: Lesson plans are provided, there are no “free trial” class requirements, most of the students are engaged/motivated, and ongoing training is offered (though required and unpaid).

The BAD: As a general guideline, expect every policy and scenario to be tilted against the teacher. Likeshuo does not promote a teacher-friendly environment or work experience.
    – The teaching platform is basic and limiting (think cheap Chinese knockoff of Skype).
    – Likeshuo’s website is not well optimized and technical issues are very common, which can create a stressful situation when attempting to login for a class.
    – If you experience a technical problem that makes you late you must screenshot with a timestamp no less than 5 min before the class and submit a written report.
    – If you are less than 5 min early, you are fined and deducted points.
    – If you are not logged in to the classroom by the start time your class will automatically be given to a substitute, so there is no possibility of being even one minute late and you will be fined 300% of your class rate and points will be deducted.
    – If you experience technical issues that prevent you from teaching, you are not compensated.
    – Your accrued points for the month determine your pay rate.
    – The point system lacks transparency and utilizes moving percentage targets, so you cannot be sure of how many classes you need to teach or points you need to get to increase your pay rate or what your pay rate per class will be until after the month is over.
    – The scheduling system uses an algorithm that is not transparent so you cannot be certain of how many classes will be booked in a day, week, or month – increasing your availability does not necessarily result in additional classes.
    – Don’t expect more than two classes a day until you have elevated your status…however that is mysteriously achieved.
    – They only pay by bank transfer and they charge 200Rmb to make the transaction.
    – They do not pay on time and do not inform you when payment is made or will be late.
    – While they are disorganized, dismissive, and dysfunctional, they expect excellence from you and will place the burden of proof on you or penalize you.
    – The Teacher’s Assistants are actually more like supervisors that are dismissive, disrespectful, and not available during peak hours.
    – The TA’s generally will only communicate via Ding text.
    – The tech support services is grossly incompetent.
    – Your TA is your only point of contact and cannot be changed, which is reflected in their lack of professionalism.
    – The lesson plans are definitely not constructed to a high standard and they expect you to supplement them.
    – Students usually book classes a few hours out, but you cannot cancel your availability if you are not booked (less than 24hrs in advance).
    – My friend, a more experienced and better teacher than me, was not hired after two attempts. The primary difference is that she is of a different race. I’ve been told that it is common to reject teachers with dark skin.

I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few things, but you can rely on this being an objective review. Now you have open eyes going into the situation if you decide to work at Likeshuo.

    • Anon

Confirmed! It is now official! You can earn more per hour stacking shelves in a supermarket or packing things in boxes than as a professional teacher in Likeshuo.
They are still charging the students the same prices and will likely increase them based on the same reasons they’ve given for reducing the teachers payments…
Bottom line is this, they WILL close. Very few teachers with ability will continue to teach here being replaced by the unqualified and those who should be taking classes not teaching them.
This will continue briefly until crunch time when the upper echelons of management make a dash of the door with whatever money they can before filing for bankruptcy. Web international is a good example of what will happen here.
I’d sooner have a no brainer, remedial job doing manual labor than continue teaching here. At least it would be guaranteed, sick pay, holiday pay and easy on the grey matter as opposed to earning way less than the minimum wage in most Western countries.
China’s ESL is over as far as I’m concerned. It’s not worth living there anymore and certainly not worth teaching remotely. It was always full of cutthroat greedy crooks anyway and those very people have finally brought it to it’s bitter end.
There are always better options than Likeshuo. Sitting in the street begging springs to mind for one.

Read every negative comment above and multiply it times 100. The TA Solace is a very creative person at manifesting the most inept ability to lead and support her team. Praise should also go to Nick, Jarryd, and Katrina for the best all-around support of her actions and attempts to confound the confusion amongst the teaching team.

The company will give you the most sought-after tutorial lessons, a full schedule, and a clean monthly record. You will rise to the top 10% but because it pushes out one of the TA’s special teachers they will cut your classes and your evaluation scores will be lowered so you do not get your level pay increase.

Now that they have been told to stop teaching children they are putting single young adults with no (zero) life experiences teaching topics like psychology, raising children, family relationships in marriage, job interviews and careers,etc.. It has become a clown circus. Dog and Pony, condescending, fake praise, and topics that are so difficult that even the teachers and students have no idea how to teach or learn from it.

Of course, if you have to explain the topic it makes you talk more and you will get penalized for that. You can have 1,000,000,000 5 star ratings and get two complaints in 30 days and terminated immediately. Such stupidity and loss of great income generators for the company.

The CEO has no clue what is going on, the teachers are stressed, the students cannot find the teachers they want, and the TAs are just drones with a talent for being rude and uncaring.

Avoid any job that is connected with Likeshuo or METEN. It is the same company.

  • Disappointed

I joined this company last month just before they lowered their base pay. To be honest, it would have still been better than what I am now making at iTutor, but I am averaging about 2 classes per week. My TA is MIA and gives me the shortest possible repsonses to my questions and concerns. They want you to market yourself on their stupid social network by making posts. Don’t waste your time

  • Marshall

Likeshuo used to be good because the pay per class was good – now with pay and bonus cuts it’s not worth it.

At the start of this year they stopped the monthly bonus of RMB 500 and even had the cheek to try and fob this off as a positive thing for the teachers LOL. How can loosing RMB 500 each month be a good thing?

End of April 2021 they announce that they are dropping everyones pay (as the review above states). Now your rate of pay per class will depend on how many classes you do. The rates per class start at RMB 80 to RMB 120. Only the top 10% of teachers can get the higher rate and to be in the top 10% you’ll need to teach way over 100 classes (if not closer to 200).

There are over 2000 teachers all trying to get classes and even before this pay cut, teachers were always complaining about not getting enough bookings – now it’s going to be horrendous. Some teachers open 8 to 10 hours per day and don’t even get a class allocated to them, how on earth will they be able to achieve the top 10% to enjoy the higher class rate?

Likeshuo even wanted teachers to join tiktok and promote themselves and Likeshuo to attract more students.

Unfortunatley, just like the crappy kids online teaching companies, Likeshuo don’t care about quality or experience – they just want a foreign monkey in front of the camera for 45 minutes so they can make money. I admit I was ok with this before because my rate of pay per class was good so I just did it and took the money.

I used to recommend Likeshuo but now I don’t – avoid Likeshuo.

  • Craig

Likeshuo is an absolute shambles at present. I have been working for them online for 4 years. When I started they had around 400 online teachers. Now they have over 1200 teachers. Since I started until now the level of income you can make has steadily gone down and down. I get 110rmb per class. You need to work 2 classes to make money as they charge you 200 rmb for bank transfer. Initially if I taught 40 classes I would get 500 rmb bonus, and over 60 classes an extra 1000rmb. That has all been changed as they are squeezing the teachers pay, yet still charge the student 250 rmb per class. The latest change to contract is an absolute killer. Now the base pay is 80 rmb for all teachers, going up to 120 rmb per class for those at the top of their system. Previously I believe this was 100 rmb to 160 rmb per class. If I were a new teacher I would avoid the company as far as possible. They will sink in numbers due to their latest ploy, but are useless to work for, as your TA, like Solace, will never fight the corner of the teachers. Screw you Likeshuo!!!

  • Jessica

This company is terrible. If you have other options try those because this company feels like a scam to me and not to mention racist. Few things that I don’t like include: They ask you to open your whole schedule in order to get booked (which ends up only being a few classes per day). The students are allowed to book classes 30mins before the class starts. So, when you have 6 hours of classes open and nothing is booked, you need to be checking every hour. The penalties are extremely high ($51 if you are absent and make $17 per class). And if you want to make an appeal you need to have proof. So, if something happens where you can’t prove why you missed the class, then you are screwed out of half a bill. And if a $51 fine isn’t enough, they also take you down in whatever algorithm they have. The support is terrible. My feeling is that they hire a lot of new teachers at a lower pay, give you classes during this low pay trial period, give you the hope that you will make more and have more classes in the future and just wait for you to mess up so they can fine you and ultimately fire you. It’s a shame because the students are really amazing. But, honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it unless you are just starting out. But be careful. Seriously…

  • Stimpy

An absolutely awful company to work for. It’s a real shame because I like the students and format of the lessons. You are basically free to do what you like with the lessons which is refreshing, especially compared to teaching kids where the lesson structure can be very strict. The problem here is the teaching assistants. Horrible, rude and racist people with a superiority complex. They are your only point of contact and seem to be protected by the company. I am constantly ignored and if I’m lucky enough to get a response it is usually rude and insulting. I too have the nasty, rude and deliberately unhelpful Maranda as my TA… she seems to have quite a reputation and in truth is a nasty and ignorant human being. Racism seems to be rife in this company but it is not directed specifically at people of colour as some have suggested, it is directed at anyone who is not Chinese. I’m white, and was told by the lovely Maranda to cut off my beard if I wanted to get any lessons because ‘Chinese people do not like westerners with beards’ I nearly fell off my chair. I asked her how she would feel if she was applying for a job in the West and was told to change her appearance because ‘westerners do not like the way you look’. I asked her how this would make her feel and also pointed out that this would not happen, as in the West this would be considered illegal discrimination. She ignored me. The irony is, that on the front of their website they have a big picture of a western teacher with a big beard. It seems that Maranda is a bigoted racist who looks down on anyone not from China and tries to make them feel bad. The scheduling is totally erratic, I had 60 lessons one month and then 1 lesson the next. The TA’s will tell you that it is because your profile is not being selected and that they have no control over the bookings, but this is bull. The TA’s will not make you available to book unless you pander to their bigoted views and agree with them that you are inferior. If you speak out about this expect to be left in the cold or even sacked. One of the worst companies I have ever experienced and much of their work practice and the way they treat their staff would be considered illegal and discriminatory in most places and they would be shut down. I’m still technically on their books but am desperately trying to find some other work, it makes me sick to have to work for these people. THINK VERY CAREFULLY ABOUT JOINING THIS COMPANY!!!

  • Teacher

Not ideal, but workable. I recommend LikeShuo to new and inexperienced online teachers, if only because it will teach you the standards expected and norms encountered when teaching with a less reputable Chinese company. For experienced teachers, a few hours a day working with these characters will be a handy way to generate beer money.

    Good points:
    – The pay is good, but only if you are willing to put in very, very long working hours (12+ per day);
    – The clients are, generally speaking, fantastic: if you are able to secure a few regulars, you will find the experience of working here much more tolerable;
    – A minimum of 20 hours per month is a very low expectation, and allows the teacher to adjust their schedule fairly easily to allow for other and more enjoyable engagements.

    Less good points:
    – Every. Single. Damn. Word about the lackluster standards of engagement and work ethic from disinterested, unprofessional, and functionally illiterate TAs is true;
    – Shenanigans! Endless shenanigans! From vaguely-worded contracts to supervisors passing the buck, from an inaccessible chain of command to outright lies about bonuses and pay raises, this company has it all and is totally shameless concerning their behavior. Those unfortunate enough to get stuck working here are advised to keep their heads below the battlements and not bring up any complaints, as this is always either left unaddressed or will end badly;
    – The IT platform and the client booking system are dogshit. (a) You will on a daily basis have your connection dropped, experience unknown errors with sound and video, or be unable to log into classes entirely. IT is from time to time helpful with this, but do not bother to try and Appeal an “Absent Teacher” or “Late” report with your TA, even if you were actually in class, as they will regularly and consistently ignore your messages until roughly 48 hours after finalizing the cancellation of your pay for that class. (b) Teachers are advised to record a video of every problem they encounter with the system, as the burden of proof is on you, and your TA is not accountable for their errors. (c) there is, to my amazement, no algorithm extant which informs IT that the client has already been taught the lesson you are teaching: I receive at least 2 complaints a week from clients about this, some of whom were subjected to the same PPT 3 or more times!;
    – I have never, in all my years of teaching, encountered so many basic grammatical and content errors in lesson material. There are allegations against LikeShuo claiming that they regularly steal material from other online companies, and this is not hard to believe when reading through PPTs that are either clearly copied and pasted without context from another source, or evidently hastily rewritten in barely-passable English. On the bright side, you can earn a fair amount of pocket money through correcting these.

Personally, working here sucks, and I wouldn’t piss on these clowns if they were on fire. But it is very satisfying taking their money, and if you have thicker skin than I do, you may even find yourself enjoying working here.

That said, you have been warned.

  • Saskia Townshend

    Hi All,

Has anybody else experienced TA’s not pitching up for the demo class / interviews?
I booked last week Monday for 6am and waited on the platform for 30 minutes – no show.

How do I rebook with a different TA as currently, my profile still says: “You’ve finished your demo. Thanks for your participation and patience, we will give you feedback within 3 days, please login and check then.” – Its been a week.

  • Brian M. Carroll

Brother, you are not alone. I too got thoroughly raked over the coals by Likeshuo. I contributed to this thread several months ago and relate to nearly every experience you’ve had in terms of the company, schedule and general soul-sapping. I simply couldn’t take it anymore and quit. They hire morons with fake degrees and contribute to diluting the industry while devaluing dedicated teachers. I will DEFINITELY update this thread with any viable leads on adult ESL online gigs. Please do the same-
    YOU
    ARE
    NOT
    ALONE

  • Terry Knott

I think change has come to the company. I have recently applied and onboarded. I do not understand the banner training and what I see is I am scheduled to teach at the time the training is given but I do not really dwell on that. I opened all my available slots and have been booked at least 8 classes a day consistently. My TA is wonderful, attentive and helpful in all manners needed. I do not agree with some of the penalties especially a few cancelation penalties but I can live with it. So far I love my job. I think it is about attitude and expectations.

    • Terry Knott

My TA is Solace and she is a dream. I forgot to add that the application is a bit confusing but asking others who work there gave me the information on how to find the English version. Once I did that it was all a breeze. I see those post from 2018 and I totally see the company 180 degrees opposite. Times are good now.

  • Rudolph

Hi all! I just had my demo lesson this morning with Liv (one of the TA at likeshuo for the Junior department). She was really nice and gave me some tips on my teaching style. My internet had some problems but she was patient and helped me through it. I do agree with some of the comments that registering for the company is quite confusing and tricky but after a few HOURS of trying to figure it out everything was set and my demo lesson was book. Remember booking times are for BJT time zone. I made the mistake and thought it was my time zone but it wasn’t so I had a super early time slot (like 5am).
Payment: So far I am receiving RMB80 per class (which is about $11.50 at this moment), but this is also just my starting salary, so over time it will increase depending on your attendance and if your students like you.
I will update my comment in a month or maybe two.

  • TEFL Certified online Teacher

Likeshuo is the worst when it comes to application. If they can see that an applicant teacher is better than them then they will not hire you. They are all rude. Especially this teacher named Mark. He is so rude.

  • Moana

stay away from this company! they owe me two salaries, when I asked them to pay, they say NO PROBLEM and I am still waiting. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to work for them. This is my experience.

  • Jeff

Just had an interview demo lesson scheduled today with Jessie. She never showed up. That speaks volumes about the professional of this company. No thank you.

  • Lee125

    Hi everyone,
How do you request for another TA? Is there a TAs supervisor or manager? I shouldn’t have to request another TA through my TA.
    Thanks

    • J McDowell

You can’t. Simple as that. I thought the same way as you but there is no way of doing that. You regret your first choice believe me. Especially when they ignore you when it comes time to fulfill their end of the deal. I am hoping I will be paid this month then I am leaving.

      • Rolad

I’ve experienced the same thing. My TA is probably the worst person I’ve ever had to deal with n my life. She is unprofessional, unhelpful and the worst communicator around. The company needs to update it’s policy as far as foreign teachers is concerned. They need to assign them to competent TA’s who don’t take things personally and will actually go out of their way to help. They also have monthly workshops which are of no help at all. You sit through 45 minutes of total boredom. This is the worst on-line company I’ve worked for – avoid it at all cost.

    • Roland

Hi Lee, I’m sure your TA was Maranda. If not, well be glad you don’t have her as your TA. She is unfriendly, unprofessional, unhelpful and has the communication skills of a gnat. I also tried to change TA’s but it’s against company policy.

  • Danielle

Am onboarding at the company, and not sure if I should continue. Seems to be one of those companies that holds teachers to obscene standards on the one hand (you will be terminated for 2 low marks in a month…regardless of whether a student was justified in giving them. Fuck that. Just had my ‘training’, which was a 2 hour session from 10pm to midnight my time (the alternative option was 2-4AM my time), and the platform just cut off at several points…inauspicious. Also inauspicious was how much training emphasized what to do if their platform fails. So, it appears that this is a company that will can a teacher over a rough few days, but refuses to get its own act together enough to have stable IT (a MUST if you are an online business, LOL), or just have prerecorded training for people to access at any time. I will definitely be passing.

  • Bobby

If you’d like a 35% booking rate (MAX) despite opening up a full schedule of all peak hours and having a top 20% performance every single month that you have been with the company and you also enjoy being treated like trash by a company that has 0 respect for it’s employees, then this is the perfect job for you! **For the record you will essentially be making $5.60 an hour ($16*35%) if your pay rate is ~ $16 an hour since they can put a class on your schedule up to 30 minutes before start time and thus your calendar is essentially committed for all of these peak hours**

And don’t kid yourself about ever receiving the “bonus”; you’ll be sadly disappointed. You have to attend the “workshop” which is posted on a banner on the website at some random time each month (there is one meeting time and it’s often at like 12 or 1am U.S. EST). The mandatory workshop of course takes place around 10 or 12 days before the end of the month and since they are randomly assigning classes, good luck ever reaching the bonus targets for classes taught after attending the workshop. These are the type of tactics we’re talking about.

And don’t dare question the above or anything else on the laundry list of incompetence at this company as your b!tchy TA will just randomly turn off your classes and your 35% booking rate will be a thing of the past. And by the way, that TA is your sole point of contact at this company. You’ll have one email address; no phone numbers, no other emails or any way to get in contact with this company. And so when this company eventually goes bankrupt or the incompetent management just decides to head for the hills with any remaining cash in the company, you’ll be hopelessly sending emails to the one email address you have. I actually thought this point had arrived near the end of 2019 when the company didn’t meet payroll, claiming instead that they were setting up a new method of bank transfers to save money (news to me because the next month I still had to pay them $30 or so dollars USD just to transfer my money to my bank account + $15 to my bank for an incoming international wire transfer). The money eventually arrived a few weeks later but trust me you do not want to have that hopeless feeling of sending emails to one email address and not knowing if you will ever see a dime of your money.

So if you’re down to your last dime and are completely desperate for work…then maybe, just maybe consider Likeshuo…then come to your senses and look elsewhere. I have a lot of experience teaching online and this is by far the worst company that I have come in contact with. If it weren’t for the massive demand to learn English in China, companies like this would have already disappeared.

  • Lauren Cowie

My experience with Likeshuo over the past 2 years has been awesome. Yes, there are high penalties for missing a lesson and there are no guarantees of getting your schedule filled or your contract renewed but with so many thousands of teachers/students / online schools…..it has to be controlled in order to work. They offer great bonuses for being on time and for teaching 60 plus lessons a month. There are other online companies that do not offer the same and pay far less. The lessons do vary from short to lengthy but the platform is very easy to use and you are able to improvise and add your own pictures, games, songs etc if need be.
Overall I would recommend Likeshuo (LikeABC). The students are absolutely amazing and eager to learn and the assistance from the TA’s and IT support (if needed) in class are great.

  • BC

I taught for Likeshou for 12 months and was not offered a renewal contract after posting in the chatbox during one of their monthly, utterly useless (and unpaid for) teacher training sessions. The only good thing I can say about this company is the students, who are generally very kind and eager to learn. The company itself is an absolute shit show with THE WORST teaching materials and topics I’ve ever seen. Example topics included a lesson on seaweed, family violence (which I refused to teach and would do my own topics instead) and consistently horrendous grammar and offensive, racist pictures. They would pay me for giving feedback/correction ideas for their content, only to receive the same materials later without any changes made. They are very condescending towards teachers and will dodge answering any substantive questions. That’s what led to my contract renewal being denied despite me consistently being in the top 7% of teacher performance ratings each month (a coveted achievement). I simply replied in the teacher chatbox to another teacher who was voicing their frustration at how the monthly training was a waste of time and their desire to use this time to explore/answer substantive questions. I replied that my TA has ducked answering my substantive questions for 11 months. I didn’t mention my TA by name or say anything derogatory. This company DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THEIR MATERIALS IN THE SLIGHTEST and will come up with petty excuses to deny you bonuses and dock your pay at every opportunity. In my 13 years of teaching ESL, this is by far the WORST teaching experience I’ve ever had. BY FAR. They make it glaringly clear that they only care about company profit. They recently changed the common courses of 1 faculty of 4 pupils…it’s now 1 faculty to 6 pupils. No pay raise or incentives for teachers, and they also said they want faculty to stop opening multiple student mics at the same time. Zero suggestions for how to manage this requirement and you now must write 6 evals for each course instead of 4 while working with truly the most consistently atrocious ppt’s and content I’ve ever seen. In good conscience, I would not recommend this company to anyone. They exploit you, demean you then fire you. That was my experience, and based upon the feedback from many other teachers, I’m not alone. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere!

    • TheEnd

Thanks BC. They’re all the same it seems, very little exception if any. You could replace it with itutor et al, it would be equally true. The love of money is the root of all evil. The mammon of unrighteousness. They can only get somewhere by screwing others, ie the little guy, you.

    • TheEnd

The proper word for this is slavery, you work for someone but you have zero rights, exactly how they like it. Take all they can and give the minumum in return, discard you and move on to the next one.

    • J McDowell

Very true what you are saying. For me, I have had lessons on star signs, financial management, etc. All irrelevant topics for the student but when I suggested how the topics would not help the students because they are simply not interested in these topics (let alone understand the material in them making it harder for the teacher) You get ignored. I do not know who decides on these topics but they should be replaced. Even the website was slow and unresponsive and I was accused for being late because I could not get into the classroom straight away. They would rather you waste your life by arriving hopelessly early into a classroom when you don’t know whether the students will arrive on time or not. So hoping I will be paid, I will be looking elsewhere.

After reading all of the reviews I am in two minds of doing a demo again. I booked a demo where they just cancelled without letting me know. I then rebooked and had the most awful experience with the demo/interview. I am a native English speaker (38 years speaking English), and then I got scored 5/10 for pronunciation and fluency! Are you actually kidding me. What a joke. The TA was rude, she rushed through everything…. And not to mention all the mistakes in the lesson plan.
But then again, a close friend of mine teaches with them and she has not complained to me.

  • Steffan Blanco

I am a former online employee and worked for less than a year. I do not recommend joining them for certain reasons. Besides lying to you about the “20 classes probation period”, their benefits are hard to achieve since you have to have no complains, attended an unpaid workshop and have more than 60 or 100 classes each month. The TAs and very unhelpful and management doesn’t care about appeals. You have to give good feedback otherwise the students will complain. The PPTs given are sometimes good but sometimes just terrible.

  • elvee

I’ve worked at Likeshuo for over a year now. I can understand some of the complaints talking about cultural differences or bad experiences with a person – that can happen to anyone at any job. I’ve been blessed with a very accomodating TA – sorry for those of you who had bad experiences during your interviews.

The pay is not extremely exciting, but you can regularly get bonuses just for being on time, which is NOT hard – I’ve never been late in over a year, never had an issue with my pay being cut. As others have said, if you have an emergency, you can just contact your TA, show some “proof” – many times this was just a short video of me showing them that the power went out – and they’ll reimburse any cuts the system automatically takes out based on attendance.

A lot of my classes are “free talks” and we don’t even use the material provided – many students just want a chance to practice their English and maybe learn a few new words while talking with a “foreign friend.”

I’m sure there are companies with more competitive pay, but I’m paid to chat with people, I’m pretty content with where I am.

    • Steffan Blanco

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I was not blessed with good TAs. I enjoyed teaching the students but their system of keeping you there was unreasonable. I did not have enough complains or absences yet they decided to fire me. I hope you enjoy your time there tho.

      • Terry knott

Same I had 7 complaints in 7 months and 5 were overturned to my favor. Then I had a student come in and actually on record stated I was a good teacher and his rating of two stars did not reflect on me but he wanted a teacher with a different style. He said he cannot choose the teacher he gets because he does not pay the extra fees for tutorials. So two stars will automatically reset the teachers and you will not get them again. HE praised me and my abilities but they still considered it a complaint. The a student that was emotionally ill and maybe even Covid related stated she was not in a good mood and felt bad and did not enjoy the lesson so she rated it a two star. I was told I was terminated but given another month to perform. I went from 124 to 47 in ranking in 8 days. Had nearly every class with 5 stars and possitive comments. So they sent in a TA named Allen to mess up my class and complain so I was immediately terminated so they could advance their favorite students. This is after I began getting many tutorial request etc…….I taught 160 to 190 class a month and consistently in the top 10% but was suspended because the program is set to 30 day increments for complaints not 12 individual months. (contract leaves this out). I had only one complaint. In addition, they listed the 7 complaints during my 7 months and failed to mention 5 were over ruled in my favor. Then my account was frozen pay reduced 4 levels, no contact, no way to present my records, and completely unprofession. My TA was Solace. Avoid this company. It is not worthy of your time or attention. Also, look at the reviews for METEN. It is the same company.

    Hi there,

So, I do wanna say that this company almost seemed a scam to me based on the very poor interview experience that I had today. First of all, let me just tell you that I actually prepared the demo class grammar “had better” with a nice power point presentation of 10 slides. It got everything that one needed to learn and I am so proud about it.

Alright, so all dressed up and prepared, I was available 30 minutes earlier (to be added to my one and a half hour presentation of the grammar point, cause it wasn’t provided and I read I was supposed to provide it). Furthermore, even if I had classes before, I still checked my mic, cam, internet speed (and I had 40 mbps for both).

And Echohu (if I remember correctly) shows up. I couldn’t hear what she was saying, a baby started crying and it was obvious that she wasn’t using a headset, while mine is a professional Jabra with noise canceling…And she simply tells me that I am having issues cause SHE DOESN’T USE A HEADSET, but it never happened before to have issues. No common sense!

Well, as this wasn’t enough, she then insists that we need to reschedule (where the baby was still crying) and told me to email her.

In terms of attitude, this lady was brutal, showing no respect whatsoever for my time and even not answering on the chat when I asked about the appropriate time for the rescheduling. Also, I wonder how on earth could this lady be a mentor for me and a supervisor when she acts like that?
I don’t believe she’d ever reply to my mail either.

Please be so kind to update your review for the company and, if possible, I would be very much keen to discuss this further if anyone on behalf of Likeshuo is available.

My experience with this company was awful. They leave a lot to be desired when it comes to professionalism. My interviewer did not show up for my first interview and I had to contact her to find out what happened. That wasted a hour of my time. She then had me reschedule with another TA. She waited 20 minutes into the interview to email me to tell me to pick someone else. Others have told me horrible things about this company. I am tired of prepping for interviews and then they behave this way.

  • Mary

    Hi
Can someone explain me the process to get in to likeshuo?

I already had my demo class, but they asked me to attend training courses and to have a second demo.

What does it mean? Am I in already or it depends on the training classes and the second demo?

    I am confused.

    • Ingrid

I had the same requirement and now I am confirmed as a teacher. Your TA will send you a list of training classes. You can pick as many as you want. I found them very helpful. When you are ready you simply email your TA and request to be allowed to book another demo. They will reset your portal and you can start again. Work on the points they made on where you were not doing well and then go for it. I got in on the second attempt.

  • Lauren Cowie

I started with Likeshuo about 2 years ago and it was a very slow start with one or two students a week. I left and came back this year and the company has definitely jacked up their game a lot. Schedule full everyday and the students are lovely and very enthusiastic.
What is really awesome is that you get bonuses for attendance and no late shows.
I have worked at ITutor Group and Dada and so far I have been happiest at Likeshuo. Yes the TA’s to begin with can come across as rude or unhelpful but it’s because of cultural differences, language barriers and misunderstandings. Also bear in mind they deal with thousands and thousands of applicants and with language and technical barriers I am sure it can be frustrating. My advise is just smile and wave and do your best to meet their requirements and there will be no problems. They look after you and should you encounter an emergency technical issue and you have proof of this they are very cooperative and do not dock pay. They dock pay if you are not in the class 5 minutes before as they obviously require reliable teachers who are in class on time and no company would tolerate lateness or no shows. Feedback is also standard with all.
All in all, I love Likeshuo and enjoy working there very much and have had a brilliant experience with the company.

  • anon y mous

You don’t want to work here unless you absolutely have to.
I applied and, frankly, after taking a test after the training class, decided not to proceed. Why? I didn’t like how I was treated, or talked to, or what was expected of me.
Examples: Give a student 5 stars even if they didn’t attend. Basically, prime and pat the student (and I was supposed to teach adults). Sorry. I don’t do that.
Another example? I never got to SEE my TA (teacher assistant). When I interviewed AND gave my demo my TA did not turn on her video, and gave a lame excuse as to why she wouldn’t turn on the video.
Another example: you don’t get to have more than 2 mics turned on at any time (even though there are 4 students in the class). Strange, yes?
Another example? I’m from a big city in the States. I can take alot of stuff, but will not abide imperiousness. That’s how I was treated. The staff was imperious, in the training class, in texts, and in the demo.
    The pay also sucks.
And the web page’s English is something that will keep your jaw dropped open.
More examples? You are expected to write about 5 or 10 mins worth of feedback per student. In a 4 person class that’s alot of time. And, if like me you have other jobs and activities, it becomes onerous to have to deal with PENALTIES for not filling out feedback forms within 6 hours of a class. Yes. Penalties, as in $$ being docked.
More examples: TA’s are disrespectful of students attending the training class. It’s the one time I saw someone from Li Ke Shuo (It’s not LIKE SHUO, I believe it’s 李克硕 in Putonghua) Some of the students got a downright dressing down! Not good for cultural exchange.
More examples: You have to enter the classroom BEFORE 5 minutes to classtime. If you enter 5 mins before classtime you will be docked! Yes! Something like 50% of the pay for that class!!!! (Not sure about the percentage). You are not paid for this additional time.
After a 3 hour training you have to take a test and get no less than 5 wrong out of 50 questions. If you do not score that (I didn’t, I scored an 86), then you have to take the test again and score 98. Yeah. And many of the questions are about fines: how much you will be docked for doing or not doing.
It’s like you possess something (in this case, English skills) and they want it. They say they will pay you, but they will take it back through fines. Add in a little disrespect and you are left feeling…. well, not good.

    Give me a break!
    Not professional. Very imperious attitude.
    My two cents:
These guys are bad apples in the barrel.

    • J McDowell

I have read your comments and completely agree with what you are saying because I have been experiencing the same myself. The only question I have is that did they actually pay you like they should and if so, was it on time? That is my main concern at the moment.

Thank you very much for your information.

  • Laura

Does anyone understand the bonus system at Likeshuo? They say the base pay is 18-20$ but then say you can earn up to 26$ I believe (but could be mistaken). There is a lot of misinformation about the company, and I’d like to understand the reality.

    • Steffan Blanco

The pay rate is a lie. Its about $12-15, even after promoted. The benefits are very hard to achieve since you cannot have any complaints nor late absences. You also have to attend unpaid workshops

  • Cecilia

Hi guys, is there a website where I can apply? I was looking at this company a while ago and never applied because I couldn’t find a webpage to submit my application. There are always people posting recruitment ads for this company, but I personally don’t feel comfortable sharing my personal details and video with some random people on Facebook. So, any links? Any help is much appreciated.

  • sb

Can anyone help me get through the process of uloading my documents to my profile please? Having got this far I am super frustrated at having spent hours today trying to add documents to the platform- it seems jpegs are too big?

    Thanks

One of the most racist online teaching company ever.

Hi there,I’m 27 year old English teacher of color residing in South Africa yet originally from the U.K.I hold a bachelor degree;TEFL certificate with 5 years experience teaching adults and junior kids.Class begun right on time, all went smooth, the person who did the interview was not truthfully transparent, as expect.Seemed only reason she booked the demo class was to get paid by the company. She focused solely on minor flaws as weak points to critique my ability to teach for them.

Conclusion:These people at Likeshuo judge based on outward appearance and nothing to do with how passionately qualified you as teacher.Regret wasting my time with bunch of loses who think they have the right to play God over which humans on the face of the planet are superior or inferior.

    Regards

    • Ana Clarke

Hi there, have you thought about trying for Palfish? They’re a lot more open-minded about color. You should try it out!

  • bruce

Classes are 45 minutes in length with a maximum of 4 learners. The levels are from L4 (lower intermediate) to L12 (upper intermediate) but as usual students will often be well below the English level they have chosen. Most teachers that I know report the students to be very nice and happy to talk about the given topic. Likeshuo provides the content for each lesson in the form of a presentation but no audio or additional grammar material. These presentations are often poorly done and the required grammar to be taught is for some reason in Chinese and even a good translator is unable to figure out what is required of the teacher.

  • greg

Looking at your company. I was told I should start with young learners ( juniors). The time slots for young learners do not fit for me. I am interested in weekday hours during the day as I teach Corporate training Classes, TOEIC, IELTS and University classes in the evenings. My weekends are booked by a language school both Saturday and Sunday from 900 to 1900. I was also told I had to pick a specialty…. is there more work in my available time in Corporate (Professional) or Overseas?

  • Rahny

Yes, I was having the same issues as well. I will follow the instructions you provided her ma’am to submit my application as well. Thank you for your time.

Hi Doria, can you tell me if there is any mandatory peak hours? I understand the minimum preferred of 30 hours but want to know if you have to have mandatory peak hours like in most schools. I am interested but already have peak BJT hours filled.

  • Lorie J. Spohn

I tried to apply to Likeshuo about a month ago. Their application was extremely confusing and contained many errors. I believe they have now been suspended from the Hioffer recruiting website.

I think there’s alot of racism in likeshou. They don’t attend to you. You book interviews and interviewers never show up. Teacher advisors never respond to emails especially Mr Anguss. I went as far as reaching him on Skype but he kept ignoring me. If you claim you need teachers and teachers apply, why ignore them?. It’s not my fault that I am black! I am not a bad person! I am simply trying to make an honest living and be the best I can. Likeshou is not a good company in all honesty.

        • sheree

Elsie, It is not your skin colour. They do that with everyone. They are extremely rude people who have little idea about English themselves yet still think they can decide who can and who can’t teach English. They are have a reputation for not turning up to interviews and when they do they are very unprofessional. Overall, on Social Media they have a very bad reputation and are a company people recommend to avoid. Be thankful you dodged a bullet.
