Haowj Review

Haowj is based in Beijing and they teach 1 to 1 or group class to Chinese students of all ages but mostly adults. Classes are either 25, 30 or 45 minutes. They are not a school as much as they are a company that provides English teachers to other schools, so teachers do have to have some of their own material. They want teachers to commit to 15 classes per month, they also want teachers with a bachelors degree a TESL certificate is not required. The interview process is straightforward and non-natives are welcome to apply although it appears that they get paid less ($10 -$14) than native speakers. Base pay is $15 USD per hour but there are chances for bonuses (good student reviews) so it is possible to make $21 USD per hour. They pay with Paypal. You can email your CV to info@haowj.com.

Job Description

Target students: aged 4 onwards.
Class type: 1 on 1 or group class depending on the course.
You may teach with our clients.
Based on your availability, students will book your schedule 15 days prior to the class.
Teaching hours (UTC +8):
- Platform open time: 6:00 – 24:00 every day
- Peak hour: weekday 18:00-23:00, weekend 8:00 – 22:00 (UTC + 8)
- 4 hours/week peak-hour teaching time is required

Compensation

Hourly payment: up to RMB145 per hour (equals to $21 including bonus)
- Fixed Rate: RMB95-RMB105 (equals to $14-$16) native speakers
- Fixed Rate: RMB65-RMB95 (equals to $10-$14 ) non-native speakers
- Bonus: 10%, 20% or 35%bonus based on students’ review and teaching hours in a month
Long available hours from 6am to midnight Beijing time. You can work at your most convenient time.

Bachelor or higher degree required
Native or non Native speakers with neutral accent
TEFL/TESOL certificate is a plus
Online teaching experience is a plus

Don’t bother with them!
They are complete IDIOTS!
First after I’ve send them CV and etc. I didn’t get any reply.
After that I send them a message inquiring about my application, they contacted me and ask me for my convenient time for the interview.
Of course, there was no reply…….
At the end, I had a bit of an interview where they wanted me to use their teaching platform which I had no idea about it at all…..
So, forget about them! As I said – they are IDIOTS!

Avoid them.
I actually had an interview with them. But they were half an hour late. And they sent two illiterate teenagers who could barely speak any engish to conduct the interview. They asked a lot of personal questions and also i had a demo class with one of them. They also asked to send them the materials i would teach. They said they would send the offer in maximum 2 days. A month past and they didn’t send anything and ignored my messages.
I don’t know if they are just collecting information or gathering the materials, or just making fun of people but please be careful!
I tried with them because the conditions seemed wonderful, and i’m working for a company that gives 2.8 dollars and hour and they offered at least 7 dollars an hour, so i was more than happy to join them. Looks like they made a fool out of me.

Highly unprofessional company, if it really is a legitimate company.

I sent them an email with my CV and they answered and told me to make a video introduction a send it to them and they would schedule an interview with me in 3-5 days.
More than 5 days passed and i was curious what happened, i sent them another email to check if they received my video introduction, they answered and gave me two available dates and told me to add them on Skype.
I did so, and they said “looking forward to our meeting”.

On the day of the interview, i was online half an hour before the interview and 10 minutes before the start i sent them a message that i’m present and ready.
No one called me, i waited and waited, i sent them 3 messages they didn’t answer and they were online the whole time, not busy, not do not disturb, not away, but online on Skype and didn’t answer.

I waited for an hour (because the interview was going to last 1 hour, including a demo class) no one appeared, no one was answering. I checked several times after that, nothing. No one had the decency to answer or at least cancel the interview (if they were really going to have one with me)

Also some of the information here about compensation and requirements are not the same as the ones they sent me.

If they are a real company they should be ashamed of themselves and take a course on professionalism and manners.
