English Ninjas

English Ninjas Review

English Ninjas (now part of OpenEnglish)  <—- (Click here to Apply) is based in Delaware, USA but they teach mostly Turkish students. They want native speaking teachers with a degree, a ESL certificate and experience. Teachers can work as much or as little as they want, or they can work pre-scheduled shifts where teachers get paid no matter if there is a student or not. They pay teachers $10 USD per hour with Paypal. Peak hours are apparently 5pm-3am Turkish time. They have an app!

  • I worked for English Ninjas for a year and a half. I was great up until this year...flexible, rewarding, trustworthy, and great students. I'm not sure what happened to them, but within a short time, they seemingly blocked a large portion of their most faithful clientele from their preferred tutors. They disabled the messaging feature so we could no longer communicate with our students. Tutor profiles were blocked so they could prioritize newly hired lower wage tutors. I was a busy successful tutor and then I randomly had no bookings or calls. There were huge problems being paid on time as well and caused me much stress and hardship. Then they stopped allowing us to use our preferred materials and methods. Reducing everyone's pay to $7 per hour was icing on the cake and the last straw for me. I tried to stick out what I hoped were just hiccups due to staff changes and CoVid, but it is beyond repair. So sad. It really was an awesome company and they running it into the ground. Avoid like the plague! I predict they won't be around much longer.

    • Wow. Thanks so much for that. I was actually going to apply today! I am a newly qualified TEFL teacher. Where do you suggest I apply, where I could get a job and start working? Which language schools are good? Any advice would be much appreciated :)

  • This platform is a fraud, please don't apply. They suddenly cancel all your classes of some region, makes you have NO students, and block them/the region for no reason. Then, they also remove all your message left on customer service's and massage column with teachers/students. This is a lousy platform, they are facing credit fraud/dispute. DO NOT JOIN unless you wanna teach for free.

    • nomia, Thanks for the info about the fraudulent practices. This platform has been doing the same thing to me with the hours. Before mid-March of this year I had a steady flow of students but now it seems, as you said, they are blocking students from even within my own region... really weird. They did not elaborate but for some reason they also discontinued the use of teacher/student messaging saying that the feature was being abused. Does not seem like things are going well for them. Who knows, maybe now with the pandemic their operating costs are starting to dwindle, and I agree with your suggestion to other potential tutors. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME JOINING, you will be payed next to nothing and be frustrated.

    • Nomia this is 100% percent true. They literally went rogue overnight. This used to be good supplemental income. Now most of the students are gone despite what they say. Not normal for a company to be okay with blocking their clientele. I guess doing it like this is better than multiple lawsuits. I'm guessing that's what's happening.

      • V, you are also 100% correct. The company has been having problems paying their tutors for a while now. I have been with them for over a year, but now I am trying to figure out if I should continue as the pay is low and that the system continually has few students online, especially during this pandemic. For qualified teachers I do not think it is worth wasting your time.

  • I've been working with them for a while now. They pay on time, but yeah it could my rate could be higher... Besides that, great students and it's flexible.

  • I have to apply via facebook, which doesn't seem a very professional way to apply for a job

  • I worked for English Ninjas. Really friendly staff and great students. Good adult conversation. The pay is very low though. It was not worth my while to continue working for them. Paid per minute of teaching, but there is some waiting time, so its hard to get an hour of actual paid time.
