51Talk Review

51Talk is another company from China and they teach kids and adults with their own material. According to a commenter here pay depends on experience, education and possibly nationality. South Africans can apply! An American teacher can earn up to $11 per 25 minute class.

  • The information that they pay Americans $11 per 25 minute class is either incorrect or outdated. I'm American with a bachelors degree and a TEFL certificate and they recently offered me $5 per class. No thanks. The crazy thing is they pay so little but they expect so much from their their prospective teachers during the hiring process. The amount of details and information I had to submit, especially all of the technical info, was unusual and way more than what other companies ask for.

    • How do South Africans apply as it doesn't allow for a location to be put through? Please assist.

  • A few years ago I worked for them as a free trial teacher and loved it. It was the second best job I ever had online.
I honestly cannot say anything bad about them. I truly enjoyed the work and was making 18 dollars per class. But they began to change systems, adding new departments/divisions etc... moved to hiring cheaper teachers from the Phillipines and just basically going down hill with bookings. I took a leave of absence and when I checked on coming back the word was that it was not nearly as good as before. It is a same. It was doing fine until the Chinese Mismanagement Mentality System took over and ruined yet another great company.

  • HERE ME THIS UPDATE MAY2020
They pulled out and decrease all the incentives. DONOT APPLY TO 51TALK, THE TRAINERS WERE VERY RUDE. I LIKE THE STUDENTS. AFTER MONTHS YOU WILL HAVE LOW BOOKINGS 1 DOLLARS PER DAY. DOES THAT SOUND GOOD? WILL THIS MAKE US FREE FROM HOUSE BILLINGS? OFCOURSE YOU CAN ENJOY THE PERK OF WORKING AT HOME. NOT A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

  • Recently applied to this company only to be told they only hire filipino/filipina.
Guess they don't want to pay much more than 80 - 90 pesos per hour.

  • 51Talk is very strict, they don't value their teachers.. If you have rude and misbehave students and you file some concerns about it to talk to the students and the parents, sadly they will ignore it and won't listen.

  • I'm curently working for another company online as a teacher, I'm non native, so if anyone can suggest some good company where they pay atleast 3$-5$ with materials provided already, that would be awesome.
This company looks like going down pretty bad.

  • Thanks to all of you, it’s so valuable to know these things instead of finding it out after a long application process. Especially since they are on a “Hiring Now” list!

  • If you get a job here, it may not be around for long. It was good while the getting was good. They were thrown off the NYSE recently (that means they don't have enough money anymore, or their moral ineptitude was that bad), and quietly moved to the Nasdaq.

The share price dropped from $37 last year to $5 now and the losses are in the hundreds of millions, or LOSSES of $21 per share. They report the most recent quarter's earnings this Friday, March 12, 2019. .... The reason this is worth mentioning is that the upper tier teachers are being tossed by the company left and right for very questionable reasons, rather than just growing a pair and putting on their grown up panties and saying "We're not in a financial position to renew contracts on April 4 2019." ... It's bordering on labor law infringement, because they are insisting on acting like we're employees and trying to reprimand us --- we are independent contractors. So if nothing else, their financial implosion is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. ... So even if you are given a job, the losses are bad enough that they may have to close their doors. It was a good company with decent enough people. The kids were really really fun, smart, worldly, and just a great treat, as was the pay. But don't expect it to last. I have nothing but gladness for having been here. But I hope the best, and plan for the worst in their case.

    • There is something wrong with the hiring process in 51talk, I have experienced it first hand. This company hired me in June but they still haven't launched me. Now that I have this information, I am beginning to think they have no intention of doing it. I am quite disappointed. Why go through a long and thorough hiring process, interviews and two rounds of training, and not launch us? It's unprofessional.

  • Do NOT work with them! I worked with them for 2 years, and I had a 2% absent rate out over 2,000 classes taught in 2018 and they fired me because it was "excessive". They are not understanding. I could not even talk to a PERSON about my situation. They did not consider how many classes I taught, and how many regular students I had (some from the beginning of my two years) I felt totally cheated and thought my situation was very unfair. Do not put your energy into a company that does not even bother to LISTEN to you.

  • HAWO/51Talk's latest gimmick to purge themselves of the highly qualified $11/class or $22/hr 1v1 teachers is to freeze their booking pages so the teachers receive no bookings. The teacher's 'My Page' and the teacher's booking page is not available under a guise of a 'Mandatory Performance Review'. These are not real reviews as the supposed violations to the teachers' contracts are fabricated. Unfortunately, the two week interruption to your students' education is real. This is a very devious Company who is trying hard to whitewash its true colors but what's to be expected from a company registered in the Cayman Islands?

    • This happened to me! They said it was because "excessive" absences! But I had a 2% absent rate out of 2,073 classes I taught in 2018! I made a valid argument asking how that was excessive and I just got an automated response back! I had a feeling it had to do with my pay and they were trying to get rid of the highly qualified 22/hr teachers! Now, I know for sure.
